You can complain about it all you want. The bottom line is that the hugs, changing side 3 times like we have the tradition of doing is NOT sunnah. He did also mention that he's not against it, but it's by no means a sunnah and it's not even mustahab. Your "Naik Niyyah" is not going to change that.
A person may say that he's going to fast from fajr to isha instead of fajr to maghrib. He might have a very naik niyyah, but this will not make it acceptable.
In the end he's an aalim, so I'd take his judgement of what is sunnah and what is not more than anyone here. If you want to hug as a means of getting close to someone, then fine. But don't think that it's a sunnah. Again, I'm just emphasizing that a lot of people do it because they believe it to be sunnah, but it's just not. This is the reason at least half the people today didn't do the same 3 side hug thing today after he educated us on the issue. :)
