I am in Pakistan we have a spelling bee competition here by the name of DAWN SPELLING BEE . In my daughters school they start to train kids for this competition from early stage and hold in-house spelling bee contests and teach new words to children via several different methods.
I totally agree with MustafaQureshi over here and if my daughter ever go for spelling bee in future I will encourage her because it will foster sense of competition and confidence in her but I know memorizing spellings will be little or contribution towards her professional studies/career etc (except for that fact if she wins it may make her CV look nice !).

By letting them take part in Indian association's spelling bees. Indian origin kids are so successful because Indian associations have their own spelling bees, practice and coaching. It's like wondering why the best basketball athletes come from USA, or soccer stars from Brazil or Germany. Their training starts at home.

^ yes the above is true. I have read it somewhere also.
Re: How would you train your kids or raise them for Spelling bee?
My son was Dawn spelling bee champion here in Pakistan some 3 years back. He started working on the phonetics and origins of words and it helped him a lot. Spelling bee did contribute towards increasing his word bank tremendously and this is evident in his creative writing work mashaAllah!
I guess a positive sense of competition does help boost your confidence and also helps taking up different challenges. My son left school an year after winning spelling bee, for Hifz-e-Quran Pak. He vowed to complete his Hifz within an year and join the same batch of classmates after Hifz. I only laughed at this idea and thought to myself he doesn't know. I was pleasantly surprised to see him completing his Hifz in eight months, mashaAllah and he did join his friends at school again the same year.
He won national Hifz competition a few weeks back and his name is on the list of recommended children to participate in Hifz competition at Makkah Mukarramah in a few weeks time inshaAllah.
In my humble opinion, anything that adds to your learning and helps you get busy with positive activities ultimately polishes your skills to be a better person hopefully.
