Yes, it is intriguing. I know quite a few educated and wise people who are of the opinion that when one (a guy) marries, he should look at the girl's mother and as a result will get a good idea what he's in for. (i.e. looking at the mother's personality, physique, attitude about certain issues, etc ).
And I also have seen an example of a family where one girl is dark while her sister is fair-skinned, has brown hair.

Its an old wives tale about girls taking after their mothers. It may hold a little grain of truth to it but I'd not count on it. Me, I'm tall. Mom is short. I'm thin, mom is heavy. I'm generally cheerful, mom is generally not. I have brown eyes, mom has green. I'm not good at details, mom is a nit-picker. So with all that and after being married almost 10 years, i think it would be pretty impossible that I take on mom's characteristics, physical or otherwise. Point being is that if a gal starts out somewhat (or even remotely) like her mom then maybe she will turn out like her. If theres little likeness then discount the theory.

But we do inherit MANY characteristics from our parents, I have inherited my hands ,feet, nails, height, mood, memory from my father, and complexion and hair from my mother…so when its possible to inherit so many features, why can’t one inherit other characteristics? 
I believe the question in the first post makes sense…at least to me…but I don’t have any answer…we can’t generalize…after all…
