Re: how much do you make when you invite people over for dinner
It depends on who's coming, if they've been over before and what the reason is for the dawaat.
Generally if they've never been over before or if it's a dawaat for something specific I serve, a couple of grilled/roast items to start salad of some sort i.e. potato salad/cheese salad, 2 curries (1 red meat, 1 chicken), rice such as briyani/pilau, 1 or 2 veggies and depending on what the other items are a daal, raita a couple of chutnies and a green salad. I'll also do a couple of desserts.
If they've been over before or its a less formal affair then I simplify it.
Re: how much do you make when you invite people over for dinner
depends on the financial situation and general mentality of the family
back home, at my own home nad my in laws,
we stick to 2 salans, one dry dish (roast, kebab etc) rice of any kind (though not matar chawal or daal chawal), and a vegeterian dish. nans raitas salads etc ofcourse
drinks when guests arrive.. dinner... meetha... end with drinks which is usually some kind of chai
i love hosting dinners and love it even more preparing for a dawat... from the fork to the actual dish... it all must be perfect
ive been to dawats where they have been soooo cheap with food.. everything has been counted per person.. god forbid if u take more than one roti... one person was actually told that his quota was done for the roti, ab aap chawal kha lo
i was shellshocked and hte person wanted to chop off his hand for even moving it towards the roti dastarkhaan!
i would understand if the family was in a rut money wise.. but this family i knew was well off. just how their mentality was.... they even kept the soda bottles next to them and served them themselves! when someone would get up form their seat, they were actually told to take their glass with them as they still had soda in them!
it didnt end there... a person was asking for a refil and the host goes apka glass khali hogaya? like u would to a child asking for more
Re: how much do you make when you invite people over for dinner
We usually do 3/4 starters, a rice dish with some form of meat in it, atleast one chicken, one lamb and one veggie dish plus naan, salads, yoghurt, sauces ...and then 2 desserts. The kids get plenty of pop to wash it all down with, and the adults usually stick to fruit juice or water. Everyone is offered tea and biscuits/chocolates/mithai ?(usually barfi) after dinner :)
In terms of quantity - my mum likes us to make loads, because she can then relax knowing that the food won't run out and we can also send our guests home with some food too. Ends up costing loads extra, but it keeps mum happy lol.
Re: how much do you make when you invite people over for dinner

honestly... lakeer ke fakeer!
My goodness that s crazy. Hosts should never be this cheap. but you know what, there are some bad behaviors amongst guests, esp guests who waste food/waste drinks and all that, and that is annoying too. Ideally it should go both ways.
Re: how much do you make when you invite people over for dinner
to be honest.. when we do dawats, we never care who eats what or how they eat it or how much they eat it... if u are gonna be stingy or worry bout the food getting wasted, then dont do a dawat. its not prison man ... ya i would be pissed my hard work was not being taken seriously and just being thrown away after a few bites... but still.. ive never thought bout it when its happened. as long as everyone just has a good time..
Re: how much do you make when you invite people over for dinner
Gosh kanjoos folks....throw a dawat and then count everything people eat or ration it out. Coming from a family where my parents are unbelievably generous and accommodating to all guests I find it very bad taste when hosts don't have their heart in what they're doing. (I have one relative who is very stingy and I find dawats (although very rare) at her house very uncomfortable! However when she goes to someone else's she is constantly offering her own kids more of everything!)
It's like that saying ... if you have an open heart even the smallest bit of food goes a long way (because there's barkat in it) ...sounds better in punjabi, but you get the jist.
Re: how much do you make when you invite people over for dinner
I can never host a party without having enough food .. but I do know people who actually count stuff per head like Khawa said … … and I never accept dawats again from such people .. better to not eat at their place then get morsels counted
But at my own place , I always maintain a balanced menu, overloading the dining table can make the menu over whelming .. so mostly its 2 meat salans and naans and one rice dish ( biryani etc ) and one side dish , either kababs or mix platter … and chutnies of one or two kind and salad of two kinds at least.
