Unconditional love isn't easy. You could say that it can't exist because we are able to derive pleasure from even altruist acts. However, there is only so much control we have on our intrinsic nature - that is for example; being proud of yourself for helping a poor man (i.e. deriving pleasure from an altruistic act). We can, though, control our conscious desires and expectations. I consider it unconditional love where one is willing to let go of what they might gain (an exchange) from the other person for loving/caring about them. To love freely without expectations (and judgement; that stem from failed expectations) is unconditional love.
Unlimited Compassion is probably the highest stage of unconditional love.

^for me, i can see the very romantic side of unconditional love, it's a beautiful thought
but would a person still love their fiance/bf if he was abusive? i would do anything for the man i would love but that's one thing i refuse without a doubt, we are human after all, i would feel pure hate that with constant abuse would turn into indifference. so unconditional love is that for me. a very negative thing.
although i like your version of it since there are men out there that are sweet/decent/loving/understanding. good luck with that :)

You bring up a good point. This is how I see it:
For one to love others unconditionally, he/she MUST love themselves unconditionally. To love ones own self unconditionally means to forgive yourself when you do something wrong, as well as take care of and protect yourself.
If one decides to stay in an abusive relationship, they do not love themselves, let alone unconditional love for that person. They are simply dependent on them. Unconditional love requires one to take care of themselves just the same way they would take care of a best friend or their kid or something. If one doesn't, and claims to love the other person unconditionally, they are just lying to themselves.
But this love for one's self is not selfish. You take care of yourself and care for others, without expecting them to fulfill any of your needs. You don't sacrifice yourself for others, because you recognize how important it is to take care of yourself as well. It is a place of compassion for everyone, with no strings attached, whatsoever.
This is obviously not easy. Human beings can not survive without other humans. Depending on others is innate. But our highly developed frontal lobes (compared to other animals) allow us to be able to distinguish between independence, companionship and unhealthy dependency.

Well…this is how I knew…he said he loves me, then after a while he said he wants to marry me…then he started talking abt babies…then you know he is SERIOUS!!!
