Re: How do you get rid of mice/rats successfully

peppermint stops them entering if you place around your house but once they are in they are hard to get rid of.

glue traps do work for the adventurace mice, when they dont return to their fmaily they other mice cotton on and the glue traps are useless. (ps if u want to humanly dispose of glued mice still alive take into a far away field or park and pour warm water on the trap the glue will soften, far away meaning 3+ miles otherwise they will find their way back to your home).

You have to do a multi theme attack. ie glue, poison, traps and find out the place they entered the house and block.

I found the most successful trap to be a plastic food container with a can of beans or heavy stuff on top held up by a straw with peanut butter on the end. like http://www.smithsax.btinternet.co.uk/products.htm The older mice wont often wonder into these traps you get the young ones. You can put 4/5 of these all around in the kitchen. make sure you put something heavy ontop as you will catch live mice. then you have to be careful not to lose the mouse when you have caught it. be aware they can jump 3 feet and also ca get thru tiny 1 cm holes.

Also put traps in the actual food bin. they will be in there at night eating food. this is where they normal mouse traps will work.

Poison works too but it does not kill the mice, it stops them breeding so eventually you get no new mice.

All mice wont eat the poison, some will not go in traps some wont go on the glue. its a way for them to survive that one thing wont wipe them all out.

Check warm places like back of the fridge or freezer for dropping they love the heat. They can also jump up stairs so make sure your doors of rooms dont have gaps for them to enter. block the gaps tight to the carpet.

We had mice last summer and eventuall got rid of them by december using these methods. if you see 1 mouse that means you will have 12 or more hidden somewhere.

if you dont do anything about it they will breed and get smarter to your traps. the next generation is harder to trap or poison as they are the ones that survived not to eat poison or get trapped.

You need a 3/4 pronged attack and block the entrance to you home. it will take 2/3 months of constant setting of traps and poison to rid them. Good luck.

hahaha I can just picture you doing all that. :hehe:

When I asked my man to get rid of the glue board he pretended he was gonna throw it at me before putting it in a trash bag. :o

Re: How do you get rid of mice/rats successfully

Nah i dont watch any dramas or anything, i work part time and spare time i mostly spend on housework.. im constantly cleaning, im on top of eveything making sure the kitchen/bathroom is the cleanest..iv swept up outside, blocked the airbricks n holes with brillo pads/steel wool... but this problem is coming from next door, from under the floorboards or something. ...iv had a word with my gori neighbour and she said shes got a cat to catch the mouse, it doesnt bother her that much, her house stinks, i'll have to get in touch with counciller to send a warning letter n mk sure all neighbours are on top of cleaning too... my hubs says lets move house instead of dealing with all this... its easier said than done. omg i dont know wt to do. ...

Re: How do you get rid of mice/rats successfully

Am I the only one who's lifted their feet off the floor after reading this thread.....

Re: How do you get rid of mice/rats successfully

it is a long and drawn out process as nadeem mentions above......if you see 1 mouse then likely there are a dozen that you haven't yet seen......

and if your home is not isolated (i.e. connects to neighbours with shared walls and/or ducting) then I'd say you've got your job cut out for you.....

Re: How do you get rid of mice/rats successfully

Get a cat.

Re: How do you get rid of mice/rats successfully

To update, i Tried peppermint oil. and also sticky pads to catch them..no luck. the mice are so stubborn n clever, they avoid the sticky pads and the peppermint oil is so strong in the kitchen, i cant even breathe but the mice can!! uff... am so frustrated!!!

Re: How do you get rid of mice/rats successfully

I think you should use peppermint oil to get rid of mice in your house. Just spray in every corner of the house. You can also visit my website to know more humanly ways to get rid of mice and rats without killing them

Re: How do you get rid of mice/rats successfully

Okay so here is my story.
few months back husband and I noticed a mice in our garage in morning when he was getting ready to pull out the car from garage. We saw the mice crawl in from a tiny hole into our house where we had a cable going in. Anyhow, after that we both took day off from work and cleaned the whole garage upside down. Obviously we had no food in garage so the mouse was nibbling on non edible things. Anyhow, I am a freak so I had no idea if the mouse has found a way into the house, how many there were. I haven't seen any dropping around the house to be certain. So, I freaked out and called a private exterminators. The guy laughed and said this is not a problem at all..put bait in garage and on my request few traps inside the house...the next 2-3 days i saw the mouse again even after the bait. and then since then there has been no signs of a mouse in my garage or the house. I think the bait takes couples days to work into their system before actually killing them. Also, when you put out bait and traps wear a glove because mouse are smell sensitive and can smell human. Also, put the traps and bait along the walls or side of the kitchen. Mouse don't have a good vision so they follow walls to get through places.

Good luck!!

Re: How do you get rid of mice/rats successfully

Thanx for all the advice guys, its been three months we havent spotted any more. we used glue traps & springy mice traps with bait, we caught three baby mice in a space of 3 weeks, eeeurgh horrible!!

Now we've got another problem, with ants, its not as bad. but iv seen a couple of ants climb on top of worktop n seen several dead ants near the fridge on the floor, now i need to clear out the whole kitchen again n find out where theyr all coming in from.
