Some women do it diplomatically. Their men don't even realize they are being controlled.
Some women raise hell until they get their way so the men see no choice but to give in.
These are the two methods that I have observed and can think of at the moment.

This. Women have done this for centuries. They may not have ruled in the public sphere but in the private sphere sex always rules.

You can't really control a man. Speaking from personal experience, I think you just have to communicate your frustrations out with your partner. A lot of (naive) women marry someone who they think can change but for men to change is very very unlikely. My mom always use to say that despite 30 years of marriage she still finds out things about my dad everyday and I think this is true. People change all the time because marriage comes with phases too, career, kids, old age all shape that.
I've learned to just talk about what bothers me and it seems to be working. I don't like controlling my husband because I'm not his mom. And I don't want him to hide things from me by being unapproachable, so I've always tried to be his best friend.
