Re: house cleaning tips
You can get furniture polish from walmart, it really gives shine to wood and prevents it from damage.
For the floors, I also use Murphy oil soap and use a squeeze mop which is available at Walmart as well but you might find better. I bought the swiffer mop for bathroom but it's worthless!
Re: house cleaning tips
call me ditzy but can someone please post a pic of the squeeze mop? Is it the one that is a flat sponge that has a handle that bends it in half to swueeze out the water? Also if you use that Murphy oil on the floor, do you just polich it? I dont get why you have to steam mop the wood floor?
Re: house cleaning tips
I knew my hubby gave a wrong name for our mop! :o Sorry, the correct name is ‘twist action mop’…It’s similar to a regular mop but like what the name says, you just twist it to squeeze out the water without getting your hands or feet dirty. Here’s a pic
Afro, you have to dilute the murphy oil soap in water to use it on floor. Don’t confuse it with wood polish, it’s just a wood floor cleaner with some oil added to it but you don’t have to rinse it out. It will give a healthy shine to wood.
Re: house cleaning tips
keep replacing the air filter in the central air duct, on time. You dont want dust to start settling on your floors and top of cabinets (and on white carpet).
Re: house cleaning tips
Congrats on buying a house Ira!
We had white carpets in our house too and we just ended up using sheets to cover the area we used to be in - also.. limit the food to the kitchen - if theres room u can put a small table or if theres a breakfast bar use bar stools and that way the food wont travel all over the house -
Also.. you can get carpet protector sprays that line the carpet and that way if food or drinks do spill they come out easy.. i havent tried it myself but for stains im using Woolite's stain remover and it works pretty well!
You'll find the lemon oil in the furniture polish aisles at walmart - its pretty awesome!!
I lined all the cabinets in my house with the liners and they worked perfectly -
I think theres a steam mop by Shark that everyones raving about these days.. but if you go to Walmart/Sears they might have better options available.. i dont really like the other kinds because the dust and hair and everything get stuck onto the twist mops and cleaning the mop is a pretty big hassle!
I have the Swiffer Floor Vac and i can swear by it.. i didnt buy the swiffer cloths because theyre just toooo expensive - i just looked for a comparable at walmart and i think it was 2 dollars for 250 sheet box.. theyre as good as the swiffer ones :)
Goodluck!
Re: house cleaning tips
Keep the food and eating limited to one area...that is key because most of the mess and stains come from food.
I know this sounds a bit nuts but we rarely have coke or coffee in the house...its usually clear liquids that can wash out easily in case they spill.
Create a casual and formal dining area...meaning one area is for everyday use and one is for guests. Have a small table in the kitchen with a few chairs to eat dinner and meals on everyday.
Try to make it a habit not to leave the kitchen dirty overnight...if you clean everyday...grime doesnt get a chance to settle and acumulate.
Use sheets on the white carpet as much as you can...its white and with use it WILL get dirty.
Swiffers are awesome...I love them but if you find something similar that is more convenient for you...go for it. The swiffer is nice because its a quick mop and doesnt take much time or effort to do.
Dust regularly...designate one day for dusting and vaccuuming every week.
My best friend is Scrubbibg Bubbles for bathrooms and white surfaces.
Lysol's kitchen and bath cleaner is amazing for just about anything from counter tops to even scrubbing pots and pans. I love, love, love it.
I know it sounds like a lot of work but the trick is to do a little bit everyday...its the only way to maintain a beautiful home.
Re: house cleaning tips
OK another question, tips for cleaning bathtub, specifically a bathtub that has a built in grip thing, that not like the overall ceramic tub. In the middle it has like rubbery feeling, really thin grip thing that is not easy to scrub, how do you clean that??
I wouldn’t invest in a rug doc at the moment. I would say rent one from your local grocery store atleast the first time.
P.S. Congrats on the new house. ![]()

use baking soda and a small brush.
Re: house cleaning tips
thanks lusi, do i just sprinkle aking soda on it and then just scrub it out. We are in process of getting a property, and overall good condition but the tubs are a little dirty. I am tempted to get new tubs, but that wouldnt make complete sense either as overall the tub is great.
Re: house cleaning tips
yeah just sprinkle soda and scrub it. Another thing you might want to try is equal quantities of water and vinegar, a friend of mine said it works great for cleaning.
Re: house cleaning tips
Can anybody tell me which stores sell Murphy Oil Soap in Canada?
Thanks
Re: house cleaning tips
^ According to Murphy's law, if five stores don't carry it, the sixth store probably does.
