Home phone service: Bell Canada vs. Rogers vs. Primus

Re: Home phone service: Bell Canada vs. Rogers vs. Primus

Now I'm wondering what if I buy a new account with Vonage here in US and the take the router to Pakistan and assuming they have cable modem/internet connection there, and hook it up there. If I would call the second account ph#, would it work and make the free call to Pakistan? Has anyone tried that? I think they have something like this working in India but don't know about Pakistan.

Pakistan has Comodo phone for quiet some time now. It cost $8,000 (back in 2002).

Re: Home phone service: Bell Canada vs. Rogers vs. Primus

Vonage is available in Canada as well. But it says available as virtual number only. What does it mean?

Re: Home phone service: Bell Canada vs. Rogers vs. Primus

It means you can carry your number regardless of what location you are moving to, virtually the number remains the same its just the IP routing which works in the background

Re: Home phone service: Bell Canada vs. Rogers vs. Primus

I am dropping Roger's idea and would like info on Vonage or Comwave. Comwave is offering almost same features for just $19. Anyone used them?

One more question, can we attach the VOIP device to the main telephone terminal in the basement, from where all other outlets get the signal I believe.

Re: Home phone service: Bell Canada vs. Rogers vs. Primus

Finally after researching and feedbacks from friends who are using it, I ordered Vonage today. I will tell you guys how the service is over all.

Here is the break down of the order:

Call Forwarding $0.00

Directory Assistance $0.00

Activation Fee $39.99

Anytime International Plan $0.00

Premium Unlimited Plan $39.99

Voicemail $0.00

Re: Home phone service: Bell Canada vs. Rogers vs. Primus

Recieved Vonage phone adaptor and hooked up to the cable modem. The phone is woking fine, its all plug and play. The voice quality is good (not the same as Bell though ofcourse) but its totally acceptable. All the additional features are working just fine and are easy to enable/disable.

Re: Home phone service: Bell Canada vs. Rogers vs. Primus

I've just had the Roger's Home Phone installed. And we have the VIP package so we get the discount.
Let's see how it goes.
I've heard of too many folks that got it and then cancelled it.
Wish I had read this thread earlier.....would have tried Vonage instead. At least now I know it's an option.

Re: Home phone service: Bell Canada vs. Rogers vs. Primus

I start to use Rogers home phone 3 month ago, in first 2 month, it works fine. Four weeks ago, there is no dial tone, I called rogers, they sent technician to have a look, replace sth, the phone start to working, but I got the same prolem 3 days later,
they open a ticket for me, told me with 48 hours I will get an update. After 48 hours, no update at all, after I called back, they told me they still working on it. Not it’s been 3 weeks since the ticket was opened, I still got no dial tone. and no body give any update.

Stay away from Roger home phone. They really sucks.

Re: Home phone service: Bell Canada vs. Rogers vs. Primus

Hold your horses! When rogers comes into your house and performs "hardware upgrades" they're installing a module to to install pocketcable technology. Rogers is effectively using voip.

If you remember correctly, switching a phone company never involved having a technician come over.

Hold your horses! When rogers comes into your house and performs "hardware upgrades" they're installing a module to to install pocketcable technology. Rogers is similar to using voip. They'll come to your house and rewire your phones throughout. If you choose to leave rogers, they'll charge you $60 bucks to have a technician remove your box and rewire your house again. They wont tell you that.

If you remember correctly, switching a phone company never involved having a technician come over. It never required "hardware reconfiguration".

If you're going to switch to rogers make sure you know about the problems with VOIP. If you have kids at home i'd recommend a telephone line. It comes down to safety. Also, if you're going to settle with rogers technology, look at vonage instead. It's alot cheaper, even after rogers 15% discount.
