In Western Europe, HIV prevalence among pregnant women is higher in urban than in rural areas, with the highest found in Paris, Rome, Milan, London, Madrid, Barcelona, and Amsterdam. The rates in these cities range from 1 to 4 per thousand women.
Through December 1995, 513,486 people in the United States had been reported with AIDS to the Centers fro Disease Control and Prevention, (CDC). Of these, over 318,361, (62%) had died. The annual estimated number of new HIV infections in the United Stats has decreased from approximately 100,000 severl years ago to 40,000.
Regardless of this decrease, CDC currently estimates that approximately 600,000 to 900,000 Americans are infected with HIV. The number of peple infected represents only a small fraction of the number of people who are affected by the epidemic, including family members, friends, and loved ones of infected individuals. Large metropolitan areas continue to bear a large portion of AIDS cases. Regardless of this trend, smaller communities are not free from this disease, and must confront HIV / AIDS as a pressing public health challenge.

The population most affected by AIDS in the United States, continues to be men who have sex with men, (42% of all new AIDS cases in 1995). The proportion of AIDS cases among women, racial/ethnic minorites, and children has increased while the rate of AIDS among men who have sex with men has remained relatively level - perhaps reflecting the impact of sustained targeted prevention programs.
HIV / AIDS continues to raise sensitive social, and political issues, challenge our health care system, and threaten families and communites. Everyone must understand that AIDS knows no boundaries, and can be prevented only by eliminating risky behavior.

This is really getting interesting. Sufi Yar, STDs are not a recent phenomenon, these diseases have existed for as long as mankind has. Viruses don’t develop overnite; they stay dormant for long long long time and all of a sudden appear back. STDs fall into such a category. Gonorrhea, for example, can be traced backed to the Stone Age. Even today, people with STDs, and a great majority of them, don’t even know that they have it. Sometimes it is very hard to even diagnose some of STDs, because the test results that show high level of certain things can also mean that a person is diabetic. So the more research is conducted, the more diseases are discovered. In old days, the average life expectancy was 30 year, who knows why people died that young. Human body is the most complex thing to understand. Don’t rush in declaring HIV or STDs as the end of the world. Hopefully cure is around the corner and after that there will be new challenges.
By the way, people live long and normal life with some STDs. They are easily treatable. With a shot of penicillin in the butt.
its true that some stds are not so deadly but when i watched oprah as part of my psychology course i realised the truth abt Stds.The affected women on the show who was talking behind a screen said how her life was ruined and how disgusting the disease was.She suffered from syphilis and also neurolgoical problems affecting her motor and cognitive abilities.

That's precisely what people should consider. We are not dealing with a "new" disease. It's one that has been around for ages.....but has recently been identified and reached epidemic status.
The stats, although unsupported with regards to source, still show that the greatest concentration of HIV is in Africa and the sub-continent. The poorest of the poor, the most ill-adept at battling a disease of ANY nature that has spread to epidemic status.
Another thought that occurred: America is better equipped with the funding and organizational architecture required to deal with this or any other disease. With organizations like the CDC functioning on multi-billion dollar budgets, the US can tackle almost any biological condition. Unfortunately third world nations cannot even think of winning this battle.
Next, third world nations face literacy issues where the word cannot even be spread. They do not have the media infrastructure, nor the manpower to educate their people.

You say that "that is not the issue". Then what is? Your post claims that HIV will destroy America. If they have the resources to cope, how can your statement hold true?

I’m convinced that you are right in your interpretation of sufi’s post.
But “should be” is a far cry from “will be” and I fear that too much belief in what “should be” rather than facing what “will be” is an escapist attitude. Harmful if adopted and further harmful if spread.
at this moment in time the usa has resources to cope.Howver when aids becomes an epidemic due to increasing number of gays and other filth it wont be able to cope.Remember theirs no cure for aids so coping is difficult.
