Re: History will remember Bill Gates, will forget Steve Jobs
I'll be honest and agree with TLK I don't know much about Bill Gates charity work so I will remember him as the richest man/Microsoft guy. Similarly, I will remember Steve Jobs as the apple guy.
Edit: Read Le Pak's post and made me re-think she is right - I personally may not remember Seve Jobs because he has not been etched into our brains like Bill Gates. We have been hearing about Gates since we were younger.

CDG but that may be a generational
thing as well.
I was thinking that as well. The kids who are in elementary school now and are being raised with apple products will grow up hearing about Jobs and hence remember him.

I would say it applies to teens as well, apple products have simply had a more profound incremental effect on them. what may have been newer for the kids from the previous decades was normal for them. When i was a kid sony walkman was a big deal, my niece and nephew dont even know what that was :D

I do not agree with Mr Malcolm Gladwell as his analysis is not conducive to historical records.
People usually have short term memory; they remember historical personalities when the specific name appear repeatedly years after years after years in publication and with reference to buildings / monuments / institutions. Mrs Gates, no doubt is doing great effort for humanity through his philanthropic endeavor, but his name need buildings and institutions and literature for people to remember him after generations.
Hmmm, name 2 philanthropist that you remember from 70's
There are quite a few; Hakeem Muhammad Saeed, Mother Terressa , Sir Agha khan and our very own Edhi sahab is active since 1950s
Re: History will remember Bill Gates, will forget Steve Jobs
I agree with TLK, partially. Sub Continent produced some remarkable personalities in last century in various fields.. one of them was Sir Ganga Ram. He was a brlliant Engineer and Architect but ironically people just know him due to his philanthropic work ( which was not on small scale either ) People of Lahore are unaware that well known beautiful buildings of Lahore were designed by Sir Ganga Ram. The most beautiful residential area named ‘Model Town’ was designed by him as well. He designed and built Hydal power plant in early 1900
But people are generally unaware of his work of his professional life which actually made huge impact on lives of citizens. That impact is clearly visible today.
Similarly, Imran Khan might be remembered for his cancer hospital and Manal University, fifty years from now and hardly anyone knows about his reverse swing :hmmm:
Re: History will remember Bill Gates, will forget Steve Jobs
Steve Job's contribution is a little over-rated I think, he didn't invent anything other than tablets and the smart phone revolution had started long before iPhone..
its like saying that Henry Ford's contributions were over-rated cause he did not invent Automobile and cars were in production when he entered the industry.
