Re: History of city names

According to Hindu Mythology, Lord Rama divided up his existing empire among his and his brothers kids. Ayodhya went to his eldest son Kush. Kush is also believed to have established a kingdom and named it Kasur (the district) which is next to Lahore.
Luv established Lahore which he initially named Lavapura.

There is a temple associated with Lava (or Loh) inside Shahi Qila, Lahore, Pakistan. The temple is located near the Alamgiri Gate where the old jails of Lahore Fort used to be.–(Wikipedia)

The children of Rama’s brother Bharatha were given the Northern areas and they went and established their kingdoms there. The 2 sons of Bharatha were

  1. Takasha: who established the kingdom and named it Takashila–>Taxila
  2. Pushkala: who named his kingdom pushkalavati–>Peshawar.

Re: History of city names

District Charsadda consists of two main geographical parts. 1. Hashtnagar (Pushto: Ashnaghar) 2. Do Aaba (Pushto: Duava)
Hashtnaga is a corruption of the Sanskrit word 'Ashtanagara', meaning Eight Cities. Once cities are now villages named: Prrang, Charsadda, Rajjar, Utmanzai,Turangzai, Umarzai, Sherpao, Tangi.
Do Aaba is also a Persian word, meaning Two Waters. A place surrounded by the waters of rivers from all four sides is known as Do Aaba. Do Aaba consists of Shabqadar and adjecent areas of Mohmand Agency.

Re: History of city names

The city where I studied is more “modern” in comparison with other areas of Ancient and medieval India.
Bangalore :Now called Bengaluru was a part of the Ancient Ganga Dynasty and was also referred to as a place in which a battle was fought in 890AD.That is the first reference to the existence of the place. It was initially called “Bengaval-uru”, the “City of Guards” in the old kannada language.
The city where I spent a part of my childhood was Mysore: was ruled by the Asura Mahishasura who was defeated by Goddess Durga. There is a temple for the Devi on the Chamuni hill where she supposedly fought and defeated him.
Mihishuru(Abode of Mahisha)—>Mysore :biggthumb:

Re: History of city names

Whats the history of Lahore?

Re: History of city names

Thanks Muqawwee.
Suvastu was the name of the Swat river in the Rigveda. River Suvastu was also Srivastu . It is also the origin of the Kayasta group of Shrivastavas. You can find many people in India today with that last name. That is all I know about it. Sorry I cannot give much info.

Re: History of city names

Banaras is a corruption of the original Varanasi. North Indians have changed it to Banaras. In the south we still call it Kashi or Varanasi not banaras.
It was supposedly founded by Lord Shiva. In the Rig Veda, it is referred to as Kashi (“the luminous one” as an allusion to the city’s historical status as a centre of learning, literature, art and culture).
Varanasi has its origin from the river Varuna which is a tributary of the river Ganga and flows through the area and the other river Assi(another tributary of Ganga) has now dried up or gone underground though a small stream of Nalla near Assi Ghat is considered as Assi River.
