Its interesting never knew, that the Southern States were (slaves) and they had announced independence from the rest. And this war was to put that down, the Southerners to this date are a bit wierd.

Yes, we Southerners are a little wierd!
The South had many things going against them..not just slavery, but an economy that bases solely on cotton, lack of infrastructure and resources of the North etc...
This is one of my favorite periods in US history

In an effort to weaken the opposition of the Southern staes that wanted to suceed from thr Union, Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation which effectively put an end to slavery. He was not a military veteran but became a war time president from the start of his term.
