This photo was taken by, Dorothea Lange who took photos to document the lives of rural Americans living in terrible conditions. During this time, America was undergoing the worst drought. This is a black and white photo of four families from the Dust Bowl in Texas near Calipatria, California camping out.

As an eight-year-old, Mary Ellen Wilson was severely abused by her foster parents, Francis and Mary Connolly. Her case of child abuse led to the creation of the New York Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children. Image dated 1874.
