Hattie McDaniel, Oscar Night | Black Hollywood Series Hattie Mcdaniel was the first black performer to win an Academy Award… Best Supporting Actress for her role of Mammy in Gone with the Wind (1939).McDaniel was also a professional singer-songwriter, comedienne, stage actress, radio performer and television star. She was in fact the first black woman to sing on the radio in America.

On Sunday, August 5, 1962, the body of movie actress Marilyn Monroe was found naked and face-down on her bed at her home on Fifth Helena Drive, in Brentwood, California. Empty bottles of pills prescribed to treat her depression were littered around the room. After a brief investigation, Los Angeles police concluded that her death was “caused by a self-administered overdose of sedative drugs and that the mode of death is probable suicide.”
