having large families which infact is not a norm among the educated muslims any longer

Kabir

How is having large families equate to economic failure.

Large populations leads to more productivity and generates the economy. Look at china 1.5 billion population and now they are touted as next economic and military powerhouse.

The economic failures are related to the system and policies implemented not the number of people you have.

I agree with karina. Thats a very controversial claim to make, and unless you have something to back it up, you should retract it.

Maybe Islamabad said what he did in heat of the moment but incidentally there is some truth to his claims. Geo's been airing Capital Talk from New Dehli for some three weeks now. Last night they were going around Dehli observing Muslim heritage sites (they're in bad condition) and talking to different people. There was one old Muslim leader they talked to, and he made one interesting observation. He said that after partition the majority of educated and well to do Muslim class migrated to Pakistan and the reason for the plight of the Indian Muslim is lack of education. He said there are two reasons for the lack of education among Muslims( especially muslim women):

1) most Muslims in India/pakistan are conservative and don't want to send their daughters to co-ed schools. The Indian govt. refuses to open Girls-only schools. And since a large number of muslims are poor they can't pool their money to construct schools for themselves.

2) he quoted some famous Indian leader saying:

"the govt. opens schools in hindu muhallas and police stations in Muslim muhallas" (I think the leader who he quoted was Hindu himself)

To illustrate his point he gave the example of an area inside Dehil where Muslims forms 60-70% of the population. There the literacy rate among males was 40% and among females 5%. He was quoting from a survey.

He said things have improved in recent times but its not because govt. has started opening schools for Muslims but because richer Muslims themselves have started coming together to open schools.

He also said that in some parts of India the curricula is designed to convert muslims into Hindus and parents refuse to send their kids to schools in those areas. For example, he said that in some schools you have to sing praises for some "taleem ki devi" in the morning. Muslims refuse to go to schools in such areas.

Next the show talked to some senior officer in the literature & arts center (or something like that). She sounded like a good person. I say this not because what she advocated the muslim cause (she's a Hindu herself) but because she answered every question with a smile and optimism.

One very sad revelation she made was that the person who ruled Dehli after Qutub ud din took a round of Dehli and realised that the city had no fort. He remarked "how are you going to defend your city with a minerate when you dont even have a fort?" So he orederd a fort to be built around the city. She said there was a mosque near one of the walls of that fort and some open ground adjacent to it. Sometime ago a few Hindus started worshipping right on the front door of the mosuqe. Slowly and gradually, these hindus built a temple right in front of the mosque!! Whats even worse is that the govt. sold the mosque to some private firm and now the mosque has been turned into a bar. Thats right. They're serving alcohol in the building that was once a mosque. And what has the govt. done, exactly? Scracth its left ball and yawned like a baboon. Thats about it.

That's the reasoning most of the poor give. They do not want to follow the family planning because they argue that if they have more hands to earn, more income will come to their families. The long-term result is that it backfires. Isn't China following one-child or no-child policy? Had it been for your logic, they would not force such a policy.

Dhir

china one child policy is abandoned but i could be wrong on that i read that on the news, but my point was it has population of 1.5 billion today and why is it being touted as next superpower it has generated the economy and military strentgh by its huge population, workforce and size.

The people who are poor and have huge families why are they suffereing because of family size or economic mismanagement from the ruling system and governments, the system is not adequate in its distribution of wealth not the number of people!
