that depends on one's way of thinking. i find it to be more religious oriented than cultural.

Re: Hands or cutleries?
You could by enough knives, spons, forks for a whole village in Darfur for the money you spend on a computer.
You could also buy the whole village hand sanitizer, but that would run out and they'd be back to eating w/dirty hands.
Re: Hands or cutleries?
What about chopsticks? Perhaps if Muhammed had been a traveller he would have been exposed to the way rice had been eaten for thousands of years in China. It seems strange that things not culturally specific to Arabia are not considered "Islamic".
Cutlery was available in his time. Hence the prohibition of eating with golden or silver cutlery, which was considered a waste of wealth.
So the etiquette of eating with the hands follows from encouragement of an austerity...
To preempt a possible response, yes, I think there is a greater spiritualism and principle that is being ignored for the sake of a particular ritual....
I knew one dude who bought himself a white Benz...because the Prophet (pbuh) had a white horse....
Re: Hands or cutleries?
Secondly, its essential you wash your hands before eating. It encourages cleanliness.
Not as simple as that, unfortunately. To quote Professor E.P. Sanders on the subject (an appeal to authority, I know, but I defer to the person with greater knowledge): “The history of handwashing is extremely complicated”, as detailed in pages 228–31 of his book Jewish Law from Jesus to the Mishnah: Five Studies.
Re: Hands or cutleries?
i was eating lunch the other day with a pakistani guy fren. And thats where he mentioned dat, its written somewhere..probably in one of the hadis that we (muslims) are not suppose to eat with anything but our bare hands(fingers).
And he even mentioned dat, after eating..we are also encourage to lick our fingers, 'na jaane kis finger mein jannat ka taste miljaye'.
i always eat with my hands at home but outside i eat with fork n spoon. What is ur take on this n what do u use to eat?
Depends on what I'm eating. If something like soup or certain pastas, I'll eat it with a spoon/fork etc. Otherwise I eat with my hands. I try to follow it as a sunnah.

I am not talking about history of handwashing here. Not clear what you are saying.
Re: Hands or cutleries?
If the muslims in the developing world stopped fighting each other (ex. Arabs killing off African black muslims in Darfur), and .
Both sides in darfur are black, aap facts check kariye.
Re: Hands or cutleries?
Um, no, Darfur residents that have been chased out and whose villages have been burnt are black. The Janjaweed, the militia that is supposedly supported by Omar Bashir's government, are predominantly Arabs. In that area of the world, the Arabs are very dark in color, so its easy to mistake them all as Africans. But culturally, they are very different.

This is the kind of stupidity I'm talking about.
Re: Hands or cutleries?
Why do we muslims get bogged down with the silliest of things and do not pay attention to the important aspects of Islam, like, telling the truth, being honest, be on time, and respect of life. I intentionally left out other major components that we are all well aware of (Namaz, Rooza, Zakat etc)
Yep i totally agree!

LOL...I would have called him on it...but I needed a ride home.
Re: Hands or cutleries?
a non issue really
Re: Hands or cutleries?
Yesterday i was reading an article which was about a jacket-kind of thing, which enable a man to fly at the speed of 65 miles per hour.
while here ( and in our real life) petty issues have the No. 1 Priority...
we should be ashamed of ourselves.
