I dont know about about the other cultures/religions but muslims are advised in the religion as well to keep names that protect their identity as muslims. That is the reason why , as soon as someone reverts to Islam , they change their first name into a muslim name.
So yes I do believe , a name is a very strong indicator of one’s religion. There will always be exceptions though, but they will only be numbered.
I guess the safest way is to not make any guesses coz it can become embarrassing if you make a wrong guess !

Yes, people change their first name with change in religion. But interestingly, people did not change their names when they first became Muslim during Prophet’s time. Except if someone had a name like Abdul Uzza or something.
So I guess keeping the original names is ok Islamically, unless it is a name with other religion’s association. Thus names like Bina, Mina, Sitara, Chand, are alright.
