Feeling embarrassed saying it, but I don’t know the purpose of this hashtag thing and how it works. Can someone kindly define it for me.

No need to be embarrassed. Same way it works on twitter. You make a hashtag and it shows up in the right hand side of the sidebar in a box that says hashtag trending. Just another way of highlighting certain words.
