Well one of my friends is in a frat and he had some rather disturbing hazing tales to tell. But then again I guess not all frats are the same.

On a decent size university there are anywhere from 15-30 fraternities present. Each fraternity has its own personality, its own way of doing things. Hazing although outlawed, still goes on in some chapters, when they are caught, their charter is revoked.
My chapter had some general team building events. Some were not to everyone’s liking, for that reason participation in all was not required. The events offered enough diverse choices that people could attend or participate in many events. The general idea behind these is more to see how well does the person fit in with the rest of the guys. Is this person the type of person we want in the fraternity etc. A lot of this screening and pruning is done during the rush activities (rush = recruitment weeks at the beginning of fall semester in general, but could mean recruitment throughout the year) Most of the people who we extended offers to and who went through the pledge process ended up getting initiated, but there were some which were let go.
I myself had pledged a different fraternity but realized that aside from the few guys who had recruited me, I was not as fond of the house in general and decided to pursue a different fraternity which matched more with my style and personality.

We did encounter some hazing during our Pledge semester...silly stuff really...nothing horrible.
