my parents were very strict, so it was just normal for the both of them to beat us mercilessly, no chappal, no joota but plastic pipe, steel scale, bamboo stick…you name it. 
Mom was quite strict, she still is to an extent but dad would only show his ‘jalal’ once in a while, with either his belt or benth ready by his side. He mellowed down before his death but it was late I guess.
In retrospect, i guess it was good 
but then me and brother decided long time back that we won’t treat our kids like that.
