*To this day have come across only two persons who left a lasting impression on me and was delighted to have made their acquaintance. One was a business man from Karachi, who told me that he was an ordinary business man who had reached a point where he made enough that it covered all his needs necessities in life and he would have Rs 5000 excess every month so he was looking for someone in need that he could help without the other person finding out who their benefactor was. I was very happy to hear him say what he said, and why I was elated I will have to elaborate later!...
The second gentleman was a clerk from Lahore, some one informed me about this person that he would assemble the boys of his neighborhood who make a living collecting scrap paper from garbage dumps; and teach them Urdu alphabet, reading, writing and basic math. I went looking for this clerk, he lived by the railroad tracks..when I reached his home outside his front door were piled bags belonging to the paper collecting boys walking by the piled bags I entered the main room of his house where cotton weave spread (Durree) covered the floor and on it sat 25 to 30 boys reading Urdu alphabet, and in one corner of this room He sat tutoring by sign language a little girl who was both deaf and dumb.
I went and sat beside this Teacher who had an aura about him and a look of an enlightened personality. I found out that the main room is opened every afternoon 3 o'clock when he comes home from his work and the children start arriving. All of them after performing their Zuhr prayer are provided lunch and then an hour of tutoring and then go home. There was no register keeping attendance records however any child that crossed his threshold never dropped out.
During the one hour that I was there I found out this similar type school had branched out to 100 some locations. This Gentlemen would select two or three students from his class and gives them extra attention and time and when He feels they are ready, He lovingly encourages them to go and start similar schools for kids in the same situation as they are. These students then go out and find places where disadvantaged children hangout beside old warehouses or old shady tree or on the banks of drainage ditch start the tutoring of other children. The children make pens from reeds and use scrap paper or even the dusty ground for writing and make do with one book/primer per school branch; and the very same reed pen points the way to the lighted vale of learning for them.
This gentleman does not accept any gifts or grants from anyone. He bears the cost of feeding and tutoring from his own meager salary. I was totally impressed and extremely delighted for having met this gentleman; the reason for elation I want to explain now.
When ever I hear the phone ringing in my house, or open my mail or read my e-mail they either have request for funds or request for publicity of Non Govt Organizations operations, some say they owe 50 lakh Rupees or help me raise 25 - 30 lakh Rupees; someone says my income is less and have too many children so help me get a US Visa. Some say you know so & so in foreign lands please request them for a loan for me. Some mention that they have made hospitals or schools and want publicity for their acts, so they can receive Qurbani animal skins or funds from the rich people etc etc. these lamentations go on and on for months and years and test my patience and at such times I yearn to hear a voice that says I did not come to ask for help but to provide help; there has got to be someone out there who runs an operation without any help from others and with no need for assistance or publicity or fundraising; To this day only these two persons were the voice I was waiting to hear and in them I did not detect any desire to beg.
The first person when he stated that "I can help some needy person" My heart was moved, and when I requested the second person that I want to provide a water cooler and a new durree for the children. The Teacher smiled and replied in a low tone of voice "Son we are content with what we have, there is the clay water pitcher that keeps the water cool and sweet/fresh tasting, and the durree you are seated on is fine for couple of years, and by then my wife will be able to weave another to replace it. We have a ceiling fan. We do not need more than one book, and it lasts us three years. Writing materials are procured by the children from the scrap they collect, the kids lunches and tea are covered by my income.
However sometime they run out of water for wazzu, so the kids fetch the water from the city water supply tap. By the graces of Allah we are happy.
I offered to give him money as a gift, but in a delightful tone he replied "My Son…it is the giving hand that Allah likes more than the receiving hand. Don't you wish that I stay in the good graces of Allah Subhan ahu wa Taala!" I replied that I wanted to give for Allah's sake. He laughed aloud and said "The receiving hand is not Allah's…..the day this hand is spread out to receive……. it will not remain Allah's hand"………
My eyes filled up with tears………removing my glasses I wiped the tears with my handkerchief………This person living in this country of beggars was the first true generous person I met!........

NJMasti.............this report in Urdu is very moving and intense, I am not sure I did justice to it, but I felt it was important for me to make an attempt for those who would have missed out!
