Honestly, dont worry.. Halaath theek hain.. I'm from the UK, but currently i'm in Islamabad to study one year in uni.. Got here in september and everything is cool.. So dont listen to these things.. Enjoy your wedding preparations, and wedding as well.. Inshallah everything will be alright..
ive just come from there, lived there for 8 months. its fine. really. i was just as scared as you, and i was going to live there, b ut its fine. just dont advertise urself as someone whose from abroad with potentially lots of money.
Wearing hijab or a dupatta isn't an obligation. Most girls dont wear it. And if you go to the malls or similar stores, you'll see many people in their regular casual attire like jeans/dresses etc. You'll see how it is when you go and how there is no obligation to dress a certain way except reasonably modest (as is the requirement in all of South Asia and not unique to just Pakistan). Enjoy!
I needed SERIOUS advise here as me and my family have no clue what to do.
We were suppose to be going to Pakistan on starting of December for my wedding, but we got told by so many ppl to not go as the halaat are very much critical there and heard so many horrible stories like murder/kidnapping/chori and what not on severe level. I was even told that i will not be able to shop around for my shaadi prep as its sooooooooo dangerous...AND you are not even safe at home these days in PAK.
I'm mainly going to Lahore and Faislabaad area. So please advise ppl if we should go or not as i cant do the shaadi prep here so I HAVE TO but we are damn scared to go aswell.
Thanks so much!!
I JUST got back from Lahore 2 days ago. I was there for a month and even went crazy Eid shopping in the rush everywhere. Everything was fine. We avoided going out super super late at night though--though, not gonna lie, my cousin and I were out quite late a few nights. We just made sure to go on streets that were main streets since they weren't deserted ever. I was panicking the first few nights since everyone made a huge fuss. Just make sure you don't wear large amounts of jewelry that would draw attention to you. You'll be fine! :) Again, it probably depends more on the area you're in, but I went to most of Lahore's shopping places (MM Alam, Link Road, Liberty, Moon Market, etc) and it was fine.
everyone always says its bad there, and you will always hear about something bad happening - but it always seems worse from outside. people tried to scare us before we went in september, but to be honest, as long as you are not flashy, and you dont walk around the slums, you will be fine!
heads up - nothing is cheap anymore, and people are hardasses for bargaining. However, you get more variety for your money and the best designs and can custom make things.

Don't you watch TV? TV never lies. Didn't CNN and FOX tell you that place is dangerous? Yeah the place is dangerous and I kid you not. Mutant zombie taliban all over the place, they are climbing in your windows, snatchin your people up. Hide your kids, hide your wives, hide your husbands.
It's best if you come yourself and have a hands on experience, and by you I mean you and your immediate family. After all you would want to be on top of things yourself for your own wedding.
As far as security goes, it's like any other place. You observe the norms of keeping safe ie when shopping in crowded areas, don't go alone, don't make a big show of things, go in daylight to bazaars since you might get lost, take a male along (driver tagging behind to hold bags etc) or a female who knows the area. If you are going to places like liberty or anarkali, then Id recommend wearing a dobatta on your head. I generally do a chaddar, not cos you have to or anything, it just feels safer. If asking for directions, it's best to slow down at well lit roads where a traffic policeman and rolling down a window partially to ask rather than asking anyone on the side. In bazaars if you want to know about something it's better to ask from females shopping in that area.
Baqi, don't believe the hype.** The army has it well under control in Lahore**. And Faisalabad hasnt been in the news for ages as far as bombings go.
Oh, please. Don't believe those uber-dramatic people. Contrary to the CNN/GEO version of Pakistan, Pakistan is very much still the same vibrant country with the hussle and bussle of everyday life like it was prior to the current situation. Go and enjoy yourself. I cant imagine having my wedding anywhere except Lahore, and the shopping you'd get done there is AMAZING! And the bazaars are so amazing and filled with people because life goes on and no, there isn't a bomb blast or robbery every passing moment. Both Lahore and Faisalabad are relatively safe compared to Karachi.
Karachi is safe too. i live here.......... every other day i go out with my friends (we don't have male friends so we always have girls gathering only) and Alhamdullilah we come back safe and sound. even me and my sister go on shopping after Maghrib and haven't had any bad incident yet Alhamdulillah.
just few tips for you whether you are in lhr, fsl or in khi:
don't wear lots of jewellery
Avoid using mobile phone on roads
bottom line is every city in Pakistan is safe. yes kidnappings and robberies are quit common these days but not to that extent. Dont believe those media and people. just enjoy your wedding and shopping :)
