Female GIs reporting rapes by U.S. soldiers

Female troops serving in Iraq are reporting an insidious enemy in their own camps: fellow American soldiers who sexually assault them.

At least 37 female service members have sought sexual-trauma counseling and other assistance from civilian rape-crisis organizations after returning from war duty in Iraq, Kuwait and other overseas stations, women’s assistance and advocacy organizations say.

“We have significant concerns about the military’s response to sexual assault in the combat zone,” said Christine Hansen, executive director of the Connecticut-based Miles Foundation, which says it has assisted 31 women.

The women, ranging from enlisted soldiers to officers, have reported poor medical treatment, lack of counseling and incomplete criminal investigations by military officials. Some say they were threatened with punishment after reporting assaults.

The Pentagon did not respond to repeated requests for information about the number of sexual assault reports during the conflict. Defense officials would say only that they will not tolerate sexual assault in their ranks.

“Commanders at every level have a duty to take appropriate steps to prevent it, protect victims, and hold those who commit them accountable,” a written statement from the Pentagon said.

Members of Congress said they are alarmed by the assault reports, confirming that they have learned of incidents as well. Colorado Sen. Wayne Allard said he intends to raise the issue with the Senate Armed Services Committee. Two Pennsylvania members of Congress, Rep. Joseph Pitts and Sen. Arlen Specter, intervened last month on one rape victim’s behalf to bring her home.

Senate leaders pledged last year to investigate the military’s handling of rape and domestic-violence cases after media reports of problems including flawed investigations, inadequate victim services and unusual leniency for soldier sex offenders. Congressional hearings were recommended, but none has been scheduled.

After all those American soldiers committing suicide in Iraq, and others deserting in their dozens, this is quite shocking but not surprising. After all the Vietnam syndrome has well and truly infected the US occupation army in Iraq.

I wonder if they'll market these dolls too? GI Jane with pull string screams...anything for a buck right?

God Bless America.

Far from it seems...

In my sophomore year I taught ADA to an ROTC class, and I made alot of friends. Having studied in a male dominated Pak military instituition I was first surprised and impressed on how female cadets in the US were working side by side with their male couterparts, but I also learnt through one of them that if youre a female in the US army you have to go through alot of harassment and ordeals. So this is nothing exclusive to the Iraq war, it was just highlighted by this 'accesshost' news site. It is bound to happen in other armies if the female enrollment is that high.

Good point Spock. It is said those who rape don't do so for sexual satisfaction but for control. Do military’s receive a higher percentage of these individuals, if so why? Do rapists see the military as a place where they get to overpower those weaker than them? Seems like a logical answer, there could be a study already out this that points to this. That said the U.S. military has handled rape and harassment charges poorly in the past and that is unacceptable.

One other factor is obviously that, unlike most other professions, the military folks live in close quarters, live away from their families for long periods of time, regularly put their lives at stake, have a very strict senior-junior relationship and generally adopt a devil-may-care attitude just to survive through war times. In such high tension times, its not unthinkable that some wires get crossed and some men lose control over their baser instincts... Unfortunate, but plausible.

Sounds like a defense of temporary insanity excuse for a rapist Faisal. I do see where you’re coming from. The Military trains one to be violent and over power the enemy, clearly some go over the edge and this switch remains on.

Its not an excuse, anyway. Just a conjecture on why it may happen. Everyone needs to take responsibility for their actions, and soldiers are no exception. There should be appropriate controls to make sure this doesn't happen, and if it does, the culprits are punished to the fullest extent of the law. Rapists do not deserve any sympathy.
