It is not just the ayyat, but the sermon, the ayat, reaction of people and hadrat Ali put all together gives a very compelling argument. The disagreement is on how we put a spin on Mawla, it seems very illogical to have an important ayat to just claim Hadrat Ali is a friend of Muslims, wasn’t that just obvious and wouldn’t have necessitated an ayat. Hadrat Ali, people there and his friends all understood it to be the leader.

Meaning friend does make sense in the context of advising people who started maligning hazrart Ali.
And leadership of whole ummah was not that insignificant issue either. Holy prophet could have mentioned at hajjatul wida.
