Ira, the following is the recipe that we use at home. It's quite fragrant :)
Garam Masala
1/4 cup zeera 1/4 cup coriander/dhania seeds 2-3 black elaichis (broken) 1 big cinnamon stick (broken) 15-16 black cloves 30-35 whole black peppercorns
Dry roast all ingredients in a frying pan. Once cool, grind to a powder.
Sehar, thats exactly how i make my garam masala but dont roast them! I also add about 10 bay leaves. I love the smell of freshly ground garam masala
