You are partly correct. South Africa has had a bad run of fortune in the World Cup.
1992 - rain reduced them to 22 runs for 1 ball. Stupid way then to decide a rain affected match. But, they also benefited from the same rule earlier in the competition (and I think it was against Pakistan).
1996 - People might call it a choke. They unfortunately decided to go with Adams (spinner) and left Donald out of the team against WI.
1999 - In the second round match against Australia Gibbs caught Steve Waugh, and in same motion threw the ball up as his stupid way was, Steve stood and the umpire gave Steve Not Out. Steve tell Gibbs he threw the WC away and made >100 winning the game. In second match Donald and Klusener had a communication fault getting Donald run out from the 3'rd last ball to tie the match and let AUS through because of the previous win against RSA. Interestingly the camera showed that the ball was a no-ball and 1 run should have been given to RSA before the run out giving RSA the match.
2003 - Pollock as captain calculated the DL system wrong and RSA tied the rain affected game against Sri Lanka causing them to crash out. Pollock lost the captaincy and coach was fired because of stupidity.
I am waiting to see what unfortunate ill luck will befall South Africa this time round. Just maybe, for once, fate has decided that South Africa will have no bad luck as previously (1996 excluded) and let South Africa win - who knows....

But South Africa's batting is not as good as Australia.

Aus and RSA are equal w.r.t. fielding.
Aus are better than RSA with bowling.
Aus and RSA are equal w.r.t. batting.
AUS bat to no.8, RSA to 9. Hall coming in at 9 has a test 100.
AUS's batsmen 5-8 (Hussey, Hogg, Watson/Hodge/Symonds) is NOT better than RSA's 5-9 (Prince, Kemp, Boucher, Pollock, Hall). Are Gilchrist, Hayden, Ponting, Clark better than the total of Smith, de Villiers, Kallis and Gibbs? I say batting equal.
On the small field of St.Kitts I pity the bowlers.
