I use my iPaq all the time to get a tethered connection, both on my laptop and the tablet and it works great. Haven't had any experience with the G1 so can't say. But it technically is a simple internet connection sharing. As long as you're not paying for Tetherbot why you need reviews, install it and run it and see if it works. Or you can send me the phone and i'll test it for you :D
