Anchals post about daryee ghorra and genda brought back some supressed thoughts
I find many urdu words funny…as I find many words in english funny, magar urdu alfaaz ki toh baat hi aur hai.
Lets just take one category..animal names..here are some of my favourite
Chimgaddar (strangest word)
Ood Bilaoo (sounds like some bala)
Chachoondar (just sounds ghaleez)
Jhinga (cockroach of the sea..i.e. prawn)
Jhinger (cockroach..is the similarity in names of 4 & 5 just a coincidence)
Laggar Baggha/Laggar Bagga (Laughing Hyena itself is a funny name, this animal got jipped in urdu and english both)
tendva (just sounds like something that lives in a tandoor)
Khargosh (literal meaning is donkey ears)
Babbar Sher (sounds like a gangsta lion)
and why dont we have a real name for a tiger? its sara sar bay insaafi. we call a it a dhari daar sher i.e. a lion with stripes…thats injustice to my favourite animal.
Talking of funny words. can´t beat punjabi..every single word comes in several odd variations. just take the word "bald"- (headed)..
Ganja
tindal
RoDa
and then you have funny rimes like..
"tinD minD kotna, beshak daNdha thokna"
There is actually even a joke about every word having two meanings in Punjabi, but I guess it might be considered too much, so may be I´ll just keep it to myself :)

Whats the difference between tiger and cheetah? I thought there is an urdu word “cheeta” too…doesn’t it refer to this tiger? And here I thought that leopard is the one without an urdu name… Leopard, u know, the one with the spots.
Anyone?
Also, the “babar shair”, this is the one with all those hair on its face, right? Is it a male or a female?
