Chand Raat
Going out on chand raat for mehendi. in my house the Eid food preparations used to start from chand raat and apart from the traditional Sheerkurma, two things were a must on Eid day. shami kebabs and dahi baras for breakfast and serving to guests all day long.
another tradition which has now died down was giving Eid cards to friends. it was a must thing and if any friend forgot this then it was taken as a major blow:) Eid holidays used to begin from 27th Ramzaan so all Eid cards were exchanged with school friends on the last day of school. and with cousins and neighborhood friends it was on chaand raat.
Famous verses that we used to write on the eid cards were :
THE GRASS IS GREEN, MY FREINDSHIP IS CLEAN &
THE SKY IS BLUE, MY LOVE FOR YOU MY FRIEND IS TRUE &
DABEY MEI DABA, DABEY MEI CAKE, MERI DOST LAKHOON MEI AIK lols ![]()
in the month of Ramzaan there were small carts selling post cards on the streets and we friends used to collect them and make a booklet out of it. i still have some in my treasure box with me ![]()
my aunt used to take me to the in-laws of my elder cousin who was engaged at that time with the EIDI for his Fiancee.
playing of badminton after esha prayers were also the fun thing we used to do.
Eid day:
dressing up, the only day when i was allowed to apply nail color and i simply loved that. collecting Eidis and then comparing it later with siblings that who got the more, getting the lovely presents.
Shab-e-barat
although we do not do the niyaz, nazar stuff but receiving a plate of Chaney di daal ka halwa from the lady next door felt so good.
Muharram:
neighbors distributing the jelly faluda sharbat. yum yum
14 August
decorating the terrace, main gates, windows with jhandiyan and a big flag on the roof. Independence day big balloons, little lights on a wire, wearing badges and a green t shirt.
All the guys party used to make Haleem on the night of 13th August, it used to be so much fun with all the songs and masti.
