this line was mentioned in the last mughal by William Dalrymple, Lankans probably is used in the sense of Rakshas, demon as per hinduism and Apes literally monkeys, so goras were as tall as Rakshas and as red as monkey:D, In entire 1857 communication they are referred as Kafir, incidently hindus are not called kafir but british are called kafir.
The best line on 1857 was said by my teacher in DU, “1857 is turning point in Indian history” then he walked towards door and before moving out utterred “but India refused to turn”:D, we ended our class in laughter:D
