Freedom of speech & Western hypocrisy.

Re: Freedom of speech & Western hypocrisy.

While killing of any ambasaddor is highly condemn able act and Prophet SAW himself set and example with high level of tolerance to Musalaima Kazzab only because of being ambassador. But western countries should examine their stance on freedom of speech. One can say whatever he wants, but must not torture 1.5B people on Earth. Few hundred people on each side are taking advantage of the situation.

Re: Freedom of speech & Western hypocrisy.

How is this relevant? The UK has some of the strictest restriction of Freedom of Speech in the Western World. If this “Innocense Of Muslims” movie had been made in the UK, it would have been in violation of the law as it would be easy to show that it was intended to cause a breach of the peace.

You would need to find a similar example from the legal jurisdiction that the movie was made in.

It might be news for you, but… the West is not one country. Different countries in the West have different laws on freedom of speech.

Re: Freedom of speech & Western hypocrisy.

Perhaps chachi Clinton could explain why her fancy speech about internet/press freedom does not apply to Wikileaks.

"When ideas are blocked, information deleted, conversations stifled, and people constrained in their choices, the internet is diminished for all of us. The United States wants the internet to remain a space where economic, political, and social exchanges flourish. To do that, we need to protect people who exercise their rights online."

Lol and then there's Bradley Manning facing capital punishment. If he and Julian Assange violated the Espionage Act, so did the New York Times, The Guardian, and 3 other major newspapers from around the world. The obtained, distributed and communicated classified documents. So do the newspapers' owners/editors/journalists etc deserve the death penalty or lengthy jail sentences too?

Re: Freedom of speech & Western hypocrisy.

No they didn't. And many Americans consider those actions to be an abuse of power.

There is a double standard, but the point people like Hitchens have made is that questioning or insulting Islam results in violence, so it becomes an Islam vs Free Speech issue. If we just ignored the hate mongers, they would stop receiving publicity. Instead, we do the monkey dance every time.

Re: Freedom of speech & Western hypocrisy.

Freedom of expression is acceptable when they want to offend you but not acceptable when you use it against them. Where is the freedom of expression when the french women want to cover their head? Hypocrispy...and haven't they got better things to do than to monitor who says what over the internet.

Re: Freedom of speech & Western hypocrisy.

I don't agree with his comments but I wonder if anyone has ever been arrested for spewing hateful and racists remarks about the Muslim world. We see hundreds, if not thousands, of comments made by the US & UK citizens alike calling for the eradication of Islam/Muslims on a daily basis and I have yet to see anyone being held responsible (let alone arrested & convicted) for such horrid tirades. I understand that "freedom of speech laws" may be different in the UK but to think that a quasi-coherent & insensitive comment made by an over zealous teenager warrants a criminal conviction is beyond dictatorial & bigoted.

Re: Freedom of speech & Western hypocrisy.

Where in my post did I mention anything about the riots or the movie? :-/

Re: Freedom of speech & Western hypocrisy.

The United States and the UK are two independent countries with their own set of laws. Freedom of Speech is the cornerstone of our democracy. Conspiracy theorists will find ways to implicate the United States in the production of this film, but we have said before and we say again that the United States government had nothing to do with this hateful movie.

Re: Freedom of speech & Western hypocrisy.

Let me get this straight Captain…the U.S government has no links with the movie but you feel proud of the Freedom to Offend? Whether people are getting offended for the right or the wrong reason, surely the government has an obligation to act on the sentiment of a vast number of its own citizens and for the social cohesion of its own society, if nothing else.

Re: Freedom of speech & Western hypocrisy.

Aside from distinguishing the difference in US and UK laws. Majority of people on here fail to recognise that double standards do exist. For example the anti-defamation and 'keeping the peace' law is never used against say the EDL/BNP. I live in the third largest city in England (Manchester) I have seen it on hand the police allowing the EDL destroy property and attack non white people. Yet, they stand idle.

They're fairly strict with on-line comments/videos yet when it comes to actual confrontation on the streets nothing much is done.

Even the whole Kate Middleton fiasco spews hypocrisy.

Re: Freedom of speech & Western hypocrisy.

I disagree with his incarceration.

Freedom of Speech means ability to say whatever you want without the fear of persecution.

But England does have more infringes on personal freedom than USA.

So there goes that false equivalency.

Try again :D

Re: Freedom of speech & Western hypocrisy.

What a ridiculous comment and this coming from a "Director".

Bradley Manning stole US Diplomatic communications and Julian Assange published them on the Internet.

Those Newspapers acted as medians in publishing distilled Cables just like YouTube is being used to show the Muhammed Film.

Get your analogies correct.

Its like some hacker hacking into ISI and stealing its secrets and publishing them on the Internet.

Re: Freedom of speech & Western hypocrisy.

I totally Agree with you Captain Kreidel.

Majority of the Muslims are un-educated and can be easily brainwashed by these fiery mullahs who have tribalistic and mutated understanding of Islam.

West’s Freedom of Speech is one of its greatest assets and thats why the best and the brightest from around the world choose to live there.

Even today all these moronic protestors where given the choice of living in their country or living in the west, 90% will choose to immigrate to the country where that Film was produced.

Re: Freedom of speech & Western hypocrisy.

Umm the 5 newspapers did not just innocently report the leaked cables story, they partnered up with Wikileaks, they obtained those documents after being granted early access and they ALL simultaneously published the *whole *cables (the first 200 or so). So if you're going to charge Wikileaks, charge the newspapers too for the Espionage Act criminalizes obtaining and communicating classified government info and it doesn't matter what your source is, whether you obtained it from Manning or Wikileaks or whoever else. Unless you're making your own little amendment and telling me the newspapers can't be charged because they obtained it from Assange not Manning.

Forget the Wikileaks business, how was the Espionage Act not violated when The New York Times previously exposed the President's warrantless surveillance program?

Re: Freedom of speech & Western hypocrisy.

Those 5 Newspapers published something which was already stolen and they carefully vetted any information which might be sensitive.

Just like in 1971, the New York Times published the Pentagon Papers which detailed the secret US bombing of Cambodia.

Newspapers job is to report on the News.

Bradley Manning stole that information and that is why he is sitting in a Military Jail.

As for Julian Assange, he is just a messenger, so I disagree with his house arrest charges.

But I fail to see what this has to do with the Muhammed Film.

If you are trying to create an equivalency that the makers of the Muhammed Film are free and Bradley Manning and Julian Assange are under prison, then you are drawing a false equivalence.

The makers of the Muhammed Film didn't steal anything, they created a hate film and put it on the Internet. US has no power to prosecute them because no crime has been committed. Bradley Manning stole classified US information and that is why he is sitting in Jail.

Just like in Pakistan where a woman can be gangraped on the orders of the Tribal Cheifs or a 12 year old girl can be imprisoned for Burning the Quran. No such barbaric laws exist in USA or the West.

Just because something is sensitive to you doesn't mean it is also for everyone else.

I hope you understand now.

Re: Freedom of speech & Western hypocrisy.

Your bonus check is in mail :chai:

Re: Freedom of speech & Western hypocrisy.

A white guy was in jail for similar stupid comments on Twitter about that black football player who had a heart attack. So it is not just Muslims being targeted by the authorities.

Re: Freedom of speech & Western hypocrisy.

The investigation is still ongoing so let's not draw any conclusions and say the newspapers did nothing wrong. The senators have been questioned about whether the newspapers are equally responsible and they haven't given a straight answer yet. We'll wait and see how this unfolds.

Then we're on the same page.

No I'm not and neither was the OP. She didn't even mention the film in her post.

And I haven't refuted this anywhere, have I? My position on this whole film fiasco is quite clear by my post in an AV thread. It's been blown out of proportion and I'm certainly not looking to get anyone jailed.

Re: Freedom of speech & Western hypocrisy.

Thats England.

If this movie had been made in England, then the producer would be facing criminal charges.

USA has different freedom of speech laws vs England.
