Yeah, RS-485 is strictly industrial electronics... When you have a noisy environment, especially close to induction motors, RS-232 becomes very unreliable, and isnt recommended beyond a foot or two. Its not good because it not a differential pair, unlike the RS-485. There are some really nice RS-485 trancievers out there, I recommend Sipex, Texas Instruments and Maxim ICs. Btw, the new processor I mentioned, the AR91SAM7S, its got an RS-485 mode on its UART, that things a killa!
