ZZ,
Looks like this thread caught you in a bad mood. Take it easy pal. Never seen you get so worked up about Kashmir and other issues. And you don't even believe in Kundalis.
And the rest of you as well, plz maintain decorum.
The Mods have gone off to sleep as usual.

Victory, I found an article about ritvik, Source: http://members.fortunecity.com/dev3/ritvik_and.htm

‘Rtau yajtiti rtvik.’ One who conducts sacrifices according to Vedic
mantras is called a rtvik. There is an arrangement of sixteen types of
rtviks to peform Vedic sacrifices. These are Brahma, udgata, hota,
adhvaryu,Brahmaccsi, prastota, matiavarun, pratisthata, pota,
pratiharta, accavak, nestha, agnidhra, suBrahmanya, gravastota,
and unyaita. The yaman employs priests to perform sacrifices for him
and pays them. He selects these sixteen types of rtviks for the
sacrifices. All these are virtuous, of high character, learned in the
Vedas and expert in execution and supervision of sacrifices. Among all
these sixteen rtviks, hota, udgata, adhvaryu and Brahma are
prominent.

Thanks for the Info. To be a “Ritveek”, it is very very tough.
Hare Krishna Sect does try to promote a lot of these culture. You can attain that State, with sincere devotion and discipline.
I know how the “hota” also known as “agnihotra” maintain their life style.

  • You need to get up morning by 4:30 a.m.
  • After your morning Prayers, you need to perform a Small Yagna.
  • You cannot eat the food cooked by any other female other than your wife, mother etc. (Only close relatives).
  • Eating in Motels and Restaurants are prohibitted.
  • No eating in public parties etc.
  • You need to keep on the continuing all these things through out your life.
  • Any day you are called for services (especially death related), you need to fast the previous night and also on the night of the function day.
  • You need to perform Penance to purify the sins that you might have got in these acts.

Just changing the subject slightly, in gatherings such as the kumbh mela is kundalees practiced by many different sects and available to the pilgrims or is it only found in the Shiva Temples of South India ?

These Kundalees are practised by all the different sects all over India. You can also find a number of quacks. Many of them are trained traditionally under a Guru or gain knowledge heriditarily. You will find them flocking them to the Kumbh Mela and other places, because for many of these priests, that is a source of living.

I mentioned Vaideeswaran Koil, because, it is very famous and the predictions are very accurate.

With others, you may have to take the prediction with a pinch of spice and salt.

Kundalee is actually the position of the various astronomical bodies at the time of your birth. Based on what time you are born, the classification is done to which Star you belong and so which Raasi you belong.

I personally am ambivalent about Hindu Astrologers. Too many of them and too many schools and traditions!!
I happen to know a few who are quite scholarly.

Thanks for clarifying that victory. So in a way it is a common practice in India but as you said only proper qualified priests can make accurate predictions such as the Vaideeswaran Koil Temple.

Victory again a side question, Can they also predict events that will occur say in next few years. I saw information about this in a ritvikism article.

Always In search of the TRUTH

DHP,
Predictions for humans is a slightly different subject from prediction for a Geographical entity.

However, every year (especially in South India), we have the practice of reading the panchangam (religious forecast book) on the Ugadi day (the first day of Hindu Month of Chaitra Masam, generally in the month of march-april). That is the New Year day for south Indians.

In that book you can find what is the prediction for the Geographical entities. However, catastrophies are not warned in precise, there will be warnings like,
"In the month of November, there will be severe loss of life and property due to cyclones",

But, it doesnt say exactly who are going to die and on what date.

Also, you can find predictions like,
"This year the monsoons are late, but will be very good, giving a good crop "
Some Panchangam's also give prediction for the world, but they are generalised and Not so specific.

So what your saying is panchangam is more related to astrological charts. I remember reading an article about some Hindu scholar forecasting about what will happen with India in regard to Kashmir. I suppose many of these predictions arent realy taken seriously by people.

Yeah,
Many people do not take predictions very seriously. However, they are referred to fix the dates for functions like weddings, etc..
In some villages, based onthe forecast for a particular area, special poojas are performed to ward off any bad omens.
Also, the panchangam contains information like Solar and Lunar Eclipse, any special events like Comet visits etc.
