**********A five-wicket haul from Mohammad Irfan, followed by an unbeaten 93 from Sohaib Maqsoodhelped Pakistan edge Bangladesh by three wickets in their warm-up game in Sydney.

*Bangladesh, opting to bat, lost two early wickets, but Tamim Iqbal and Mahmudullahcounterattacked, adding 168 for the third wicket. Tamim stroked five fours during his 81, as did Mahmudullah during his 83. The pair took Bangladesh close to the 200-run mark, but Mahmudullah was run out in the 40th over, triggering a collapse that led to the team losing its last eight wickets for just 62 runs. Apart from Shakib Al Hasan, who chipped in with 31, none of Bangladesh’s last seven batsmen could make more than 15. Irfan collected 5 for 52, including three scalps in the final over, to wipe out the tail and dismiss Bangladesh for 246.

Pakistan’s openers departed early in the chase, leaving the team precariously placed at 8 for 2, but their middle order led a recovery. Haris Sohail (39) first put up a 51-run partnership with Younis Khan (25), after which Maqsood took charge. With the asking rate rising, Maqsood and Umar Akmal eased the pressure by adding 63 for the fifth wicket. Bangladesh fought back with two quick wickets, but Shahid Afridi muscled three crucial fours to race to 24 off 20 balls, before he was dismissed by Shakib. It meant that Pakistan needed just seven more runs from three overs, and Maqsood, who hit nine fours and two sixes during his 90-ball knock, helped overhaul the target in 48.1 overs.

Re: First warm up match 'Pak vs BD'

Sohail Khan surprisingly very economical today

Re: First warm up match 'Pak vs BD'

Good to see Sohaib scoring runs. I would like to see Sohaib, Haris, and Umar play a bit up the order. At their present positions, almost always they have to play under pressure as we lose the first few wickets very early on in the innings.

Re: First warm up match 'Pak vs BD'

Job done but I won't call this a convincing win
Younis Khan is clearly the weakest link in this batting line-up. too slow and not many runs with the bat either. By unfairly hogging up no. 3 spot, he is only putting more pressure on the batsmen to follow with his go-slow batting approach

Re: First warm up match 'Pak vs BD'

And this is where Misbah captaincy come is. He encourages such innings building. There is obsession on lasting 50 overs.

By wasting the 1st 15 overs.

Re: First warm up match 'Pak vs BD'

I agree. Such approach can often backfire and Younis is no Miandad. Miandad often took his time at the crease - he nearly always came in to bat in a crisis situation and had to build an innings; hint: 1992 WC - before accelerating and scoring some quick runs. i.e. more often than not he would make his stay at the wicket count.

The thing with Younis is not only he uses up way too many dot balls initially but also gets out cheaply thus doubling the team's predicament. Misbah is a slow starter too but at least he Is more consistent with the bat

Re: First warm up match 'Pak vs BD'

Irfan 5/52. Imagine if we had Junaid and Aamir.

Re: First warm up match ‘Pak vs BD’

Not sure who was warming up who? :konfused:

Re: First warm up match 'Pak vs BD'

^ so much innuendo

Re: First warm up match 'Pak vs BD'

I have always maintained that despite YK's legendary status in test arena, he will not be a great fit in ODI line up. Not even on Aussie pitches. If only he could open then might be... Sohaib and Umar Akmal must play and so should Haris Sohail.

Re: First warm up match 'Pak vs BD'

^ and on top of that, add Misbah in the lineup too. They both are same style players (accumulator) but of course I'll take Misbah over Younus in limited overs game any day. Umar Akmal has not performed well but I also believe that he has been wasted by going in so down in the order.

Re: First warm up match 'Pak vs BD'

Question is, with repeated failures of YK and successful batting of Maqsood, will they get the nerve to replace him with Maqsood? I highly doubt it cuz the dead brains like Misbah, Moin and waqar who choose the final XI, they would prefer their PR over the talent or need

Re: First warm up match ‘Pak vs BD’

Shehzad, Haris, UA and Sohaib should play the maximum number of overs

Nasir Jamshed and Rahat Ali might not arrive in Sydney in time for the final warm-up match against England on Wednesday
Ali and Jamshed set to strengthen Pakistan team

Re: First warm up match ‘Pak vs BD’

He is still in Pakistan. PCB is so stupid. We all know that. But I have to say it again. If you remember in the news that PCB put 3 players on standby. All the injuries, none of them have been recalled.
Malik, Tanvir on standby for World Cup: report - Sport - DAWN.COM

Players you put on standby, at least they have should their visa applied, just in case they need to be flown out first flight available. Aus/NZ from Pak is long journey. Like Shoaib Akthar said, Nasir Jamshed ko sohta wa auda deya (sleeping and woken up). PCB doesnt even know if he is match ready. Since the current domestic season ended. And he was not on standby.

For Pakistan’s sake Pak government should cancel these two players (Tanvir/Malik) passports.

Re: First warm up match 'Pak vs BD'

Yesterday's warm up against Bangladesh wasn't really convincing but best outcome was Maqsood, Haris and Akmal scoring runs. Now team management will be under pressure to drop Younis as Maqsood proved himself, Akmal chipped in and kept wickets, Haris has been consistent and can bowl. It may mean poor Sarfraz will miss out but ideally it should be Younis who has been useless ODI bat throughout his career. If we play 5 bowlers then we need to drop both Sarfraz and Younis.
