** Pakistan was forced by US to retreat, and once it vacated the peaks only then the Indians were able to “re capture” them. Pakistani Forces didnot leave immediately as retreat has to be a tactical withdrawal and thats why some peaks still offered stiff resistance to Indian forces and IAF jets were used then.
Pakistan was ina very good position to hold the peaks as long as it wanted because of capturing strategic points on the peaks as well as keeping a steady supply chain.
