Final - Under 19 World Cup - Pakistan vs India, Premadasa Feb 19/2006

Re: Final - Under 19 World Cup - Pakistan vs India, Premadasa Feb 19/2006

I didn't watch the game last night, as it started way too late for my time zone. But reading CricInfo this morning, made my day. It was not so much that Pak won, but the way CricInfo couldn't hide its astonishment (or made any effort to hide it) on the incredible victory was hilarious. I guess all of you who actually watched the game could better appreciate the spectacularness of defending a paltry 109 by some amazing bowling. Great job, Pakistan!

How much of this immense talent gets transferred to the senior team is another matter. Cricket at the highest level is a whole different ball game. These extremely talented youngesters will need a lot of coaching to ball at the likes of Ponting, Sehwag, Flintoff and Gilchrist. That they are on the right track is a given. I bet this performance by the youngesters will give some deep thoughts to our Senior bowlers (Sami, Rana, Rao etc).

He almost looks like Ganguly’s younger version but atleast Ganguly was a great captain.

Congrats pakistani boys for winning the world cup. Once again team batting second won.
If only Indian boys know how to chase like their seniours.
This Piyush guy should be blooded into the national team quickly, he looks to be a great prospect. Rather than having people like Murali karthik he would be the one to look for.
Well played India.. u were the best but somehow today was not ur day.

No such thing as somehow in the game of cricket, either you are or you arn’t. Pakistan proved today that they are the best team by beating the two other top team (Aus + India) back to back and also winning the world cup back to back…

Dhobi Bhai I cant stop watching the highlights and everytime I watch the word WOWWWWWWWWWWWWWW comes out. This kid Anwar is a special talent and I have not seen swing bowling of this sort for years. I’ve read that Jamshed and Ayub and devastating on their day as well. Good thing its not on video tape else the print would be worn out by the number of times i have watched this.

Cash awards for U-19 world champions

By Our Sports Reporter

KARACHI, Feb 21: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) on Tuesday announced cash incentives for the national squad which retained the ICC Under-19 World Cup in Sri Lanka at the weekend.

Shaharyar M. Khan, the PCB chairman, said that the 14 players and three officials (manager Aftab Baloch, coach Mansoor Rana and trainer Grant Compton) would be rewarded with Rs200,000 each.

The squad which arrived in the city from Colombo via Dubai was warmly welcomed at the National Stadium where the PCB had hosted a luncheon in their honour.

Pakistan, led by wicket-keeper/batsman Sarfraz Ahmed beat arch-rivals India in a low-scoring final by 38 runs on Sunday to become the first country to retain the title.

In a brief speech on the occasion, the PCB chief lauded Pakistan’s outstanding achievement and said that sheer hard work paid dividends in the face of adversity.

“We must say that the team exhibited unity, discipline and hard work. We are extremely proud of what these youngsters have achieved and brought laurels for their country,” he remarked.

The chairman singled out Anwar Ali, the paceman who played a pivotal role in the final, for special praise.

“Anwar’s superb performance vindicated our decision to hold a national Inter-school tournament for the first time last year where this boy came into prominence while playing for Karachi’s GBSS Metroville.”

He said the PCB would advise the regions taking part in the forthcoming Twenty20 Cup to include the youngsters in their teams.

“That would enable the boys to get experience of playing in front of large crowds. In addition, they would also learn the finer points of the game from the senior players.”

The PCB chief added the cricket board was working on the idea of fielding a team of youngsters in next season’s Quaid-i-Azam Trophy.

Pakistan, led by Khalid Latif, won the previous edition of the World Cup in Bangladesh two year ago when they beat West Indies in the final at Dhaka’s former Test ground Bangabandu Stadium.

Australia is the only other side to win the U-19 World Cup twice — in 1987-88 and 2001-02

Sarfraz dedicates World Cup victory to senior squad

By Our Sports Reporter

KARACHI, Feb 21: Sarfraz Ahmed, the skipper of Pakistan’s victorious Under-19 World Cup side, dedicated junior team’s memorable triumph to the national senior squad. Sarfraz said that his team vowed before last Sunday’s final against India in Colombo that they would clinch the trophy to make up for Pakistan’s one-day series loss against Rahul Dravid’s Indians.

“We were deeply disappointed to learn that our senior team was defeated in the one-day series. Each of us then pledged that we would try our level best in the Under-19 World Cup final and avenge the loss,” he said.

The junior Pakistan captain paid tribute to his pace bowlers for bundling out India for 71.

“All three of them (Anwar Ali, Jamshed Ahmed and Akhtar Ayub) were simply magnificent when we took the field. Our main worry was to get the main Indian batsmen quickly.

“Jamshed gave us a prefect start with the first ball when he forced Gaurav Dhiman to play onto his stumps. Then Anwar picked up three wickets in his first over, including the crucial scalps of Cheteshwar Pujara and Mayank Tehlan, to put Pakistan back in the game,” Sarfraz added.

The skipper made it clear that Pakistan could have won by a far bigger margin had the game not been stopped for dinner break.

“We were on the roll when India lost those five wickets for nine runs. But the interval enabled them to regroup while we relaxed a bit after such a fantastic start,” he explained.

“I must say Piyush Chawla batted very well to worry us for a while. But we never lost heart even when Chawla and Pinal Shah got a partnership going. Akhtar then took the last three wickets to bring back smiles to our faces.”

Sarfraz is impressed by Chawla, who bowls leg-spin and is a competent batsman, and said that he was a future Test all-rounder. “He is a good cricketer who has a bright future ahead of him.”

He said the defeat against Bangladesh was a wake-up call for Pakistan. “Honestly speaking, Bangladesh is a good team and had beaten other good teams as well in the past 18 months leading up to the World Cup.

Anwar Ali, Man-of-the-Match in the final, was modest when he said that it was a team effort that gave Pakistan the title.

“I may have picked up five wickets in the final but others also contributed to our great victory. Jamshed and Akhtar bowled very well throughout the tournament,” stressed the spindly-built Anwar, who was tournament’s second highest wicket-taker behind Australian skipper Moises Henriques (16 wickets).

The Karachi paceman added that the conditions in Colombo were in favour of batting. “There was nothing wrong in the pitch. But it was just that we batted poorly. However when we came to bowl, the ball started to swing prodigiously in the humid conditions and all three of us bowled in the right area which had the batsmen groping.”

Mansoor Rana, the team coach, reiterated that he didn’t believe his side would be able to defend a small total of 109.

“I must say the lads were despondent in the period between the innings. But I simply told them that in my experience I have seen this happen before,” the former one-day player said.

“I just told them quietly to raise their spirits and try to take some early wickets since apart from the Indian top-order the rest hadn’t done well in the tournament. One of them was averaging over 100, but the law of averages said that they were bound to fail.

“All credit goes to Anwar, Jamshed and Akhtar for they were the guys who really kept us going since our batsmen generally failed. To defend 109 against the overwhelming favourites was really incredible,” the proud coach added.

Mansoor also lauded Sarfraz’s leadership and indicated that he could be a future Pakistan skipper. “Sarfraz has a bright future because captaining the side in Sri Lanka had shown that he has what it takes to lead at a higher level.”
