Common-law-wife is actually a normally mis-used term, used as a polite legal term for cohabiting girlfriend.

Strictly speaking, it requires a contract to be classed as such. However, in practice, the term is usually used to refer to a long-term cohabiting girlfriend.

It sounds more respectful on government documents such as tax returns for someone describing their domestic status as "Common-law marriage" than "Living in Sin".
