The police do not know who is responsible. The Al-Queda link is still speculation.

the news reports that I read said that AQaida claimed responsibility. Maybe they are not accurate?

Yeah I know that but at the press conference about half an hour ago the police were saying that they did not know who had done it.

On 7 July, "Nur al-Iman" participant, identified as a "new guest", posts to the jihadist website Al-Qal'ah (Fortress), available at www.qal3ah.net/vb , a statement issued by "The Secret Organization Group of Al-Qa'ida of Jihad Organization in Europe". In the statement, the group claims responsibility for the London "raid". The following is a translated text of the statement:

In the name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate, may

I know only two in London, Kami and Daagh. Trying to contact Kami (he works in central London) but not going through. Cell network seems to be down as well.

The reason why the Police are not saying Al-Qaeda did it despite the statement is that there is no proof yet that the statement is genuine.
There is a long history in terrorism of multiple organisations attempting to claim responsibility for the same act and what this means is that any claims cannot be considered seriously until evidence is produced.

The BBC’s political correspondent also said that Tony Blair seemed emotional at the time of saying this. That would suggest that this is his personal view rather than the official position of the British government.
Though if the currently uncorroborated reports that the bus bomb was a man blowing up explosives on his person is true, then one would have to bear in mind that this method of attack has only been used by people claiming to fight for 2 causes: Tamil nationalism and Muslim causes.
And Britain has done nothing lately that could drive a Tamil to do this…
