At least 20 reported dead in London explosions ( Kyodo )
LONDON, Jul 07, 2005 (Kyodo via COMTEX) -- At least 20 people died in
explosions that ripped through central London on Thursday, ITV News said,
quoting government officials.
Several explosions at London Underground stations on Thursday morning caused
injuries to passengers and the suspension of the entire underground network,
according to local reports.
Explosions were confirmed at Edgware Road and Aldgate stations, while Kings
Cross and Liverpool Street stations have also been closed.
Reuters news agency reported that there were at least 90 casualties at Aldgate
Station.
In breaking news, meanwhile, BBC News said that another explosion had ripped the
top off a double-decker bus near Russell Square in central London resulting in
casualties. Police say they suspect the blast was caused by a bomb.
It remains unknown at this point whether the Underground explosions and the bus
blast are related.
In another emerging report, it has been confirmed that there has been another
explosion near Liverpool Street station.
Home Secretary Charles Clarke, speaking briefly to reporters before returning to
an emergency Cabinet meeting, said he had received reports of "terrible
injuries" to citizens and advised people not to make any unnecessary journeys
into the center of the city.
The government is expected to make a statement in the House of Commons at 12:15
p.m. local time.
The Underground operator has suspended all its services and conducted evacuation
of major underground stations.
Police and emergency services have cordoned off roads in central London, where
"walking wounded" were reported to be streaming from the main commuter stations.
The reason for the explosion on the London Underground has not been confirmed,
but British Transport Police are reporting that "power surge incidents" have
caused "explosions" in at least five stations, including Aldgate, Edware Road,
King's Cross, Old Street and Russell Square.
The first reports of an explosion came in shortly before 9 a.m. local time, when
the subway is at its busiest carrying passengers to work.
A terrorist attack is not thought to be the cause of the London Underground
explosions but the police have described the morning's events as a "major
incident."

Whoever did it should be punished heavily. It is sad and disgusting.

Don’t believe its the french, it was the public transport that was targeted, to maximise the dead/injured. It looks to be a co-ordinated and a group work. Disgusting ![]()
