Shahi Tukrey (Bread Halva/Bread Pudding/Bablos)

10-12 pcs sliced white bread (granular bread does not work well AT ALL)
1/3 - 1/2 slab of Butter
1/2 cup Sugar
2 cups Water
Elaichi, sliced badam pista as much you like
Few strands of Saffron
1/2 tbsp rose water if u can stand the secnt
Dana or Nestle whipped cream for topping (optional)

Toast the bread with the butter in a shallow fryingpan. If u don't like the crusts, u can remove them b4 frying. In a separate saucepan heat the water, simultaneously while frying. Bring water to boil, and add sugar slowly, stir, reduce to low heat and keep stirring until the sugar-water mixture is caramelized till a 2-strand consistency (meaning, not too thick syrupy and not too thin). Add elaichi and part of the saffron to syrup, let stand for a few minutes on low heat then switch it off. After bread is toasted, arrange in a baking dish, and add badam pista raisins as you like. Pour the caramel syrup over everything, and sprinkle some rose water over it. Leave the bread for a few minutes to absorb the syrup, add the rest of the saffron, then cover with foil or lid and put the baking dish into the over on a low setting. Bake for 8-10 minutes, remove, let cool slightly, put into serving dish, top with cream. Can be served hot or cold.

Hayaa, if u like fruit, try drying them on those new drying machines that remove the moisture but leave the taste etc.. intact. Fried fruit lasts forever (or almost 6 mths), and retains about 90% of the nutrients and taste of the fresh one. The machines are about $20, but I don't know what they are called. Try Walmart.

I did that dry fruit thing at home. I threw away the fruits and the machine after 6 months of drying.

ugh! Dried fruit has to be the most pointless food ever. Fruit should always be fresh and juicy - and preferably eaten with ice cream.

I couldn't agree more with Xtreme.

Speaking of which the other kinda dried nuts, I wonder how long they last. I eat em forever. Its just so hard to stop with cashews, walnuts, peanuts, chilgozay, sunflower seeds and so much more!

The problem with students is that they go for convenience and even if they have food in the fridge, they chose to eat out! They are too lazy to heat up the old food or make/cook something for themselves. Hence, they have to face the expiration date.

:o Well I never . . .

I ate expired food so many times..i never check expiry date and i never got any problems with the food either. I go by smell and taste actually.

How about when you think that things are gonna expire..make tons of things and invite your friends/family over for a dinner/snack or whatever and feed them.

Usually when my mom tells me that certain food is gonna expire..i make fruit chat..and when she tells me that certain wrap is gonna rotten..i go and make appitizers and feed my siblings/dad a delicious meal. For bread you can make club sandwiches.

For eggs..you can make egg rice..you can make egg bhurta..you can even boil them and make paste..and use it as a dressing..make egg sandwiches.

:)

lol, and we have to go for extra grocery runs at Costco cuz everything runs out so damn fast.

reminds me of this thread

I hate to throw food away so tend to freeze stuff as much as I can. Especially with bread, we never finish a whole loaf so I've started buying a sliced loaf and keeping it in the freezer. I take out a couple of slices as and when I need them. Doesn't really work if you're using the bread for sandwiches but its perfect for toast, just stick the frozen bread straight into the toaster without defrosting first.

I did try freezing milk a while back but it tasted gross when I took it out so I guess with milk you should try and buy as much as you need.

Well I was gona say wht shahreen said..FREEZE the bread...goes for a whole darn month that way!

And for sandwiches just pop it into the microwave for 40-60 secs...works for me!

I made something really yummy few days back..so i thought to share it here hayaa..as it might be helpful for you:

take all those bread pieces and cut them in stripes..mix a little bit of oil..dried herbs..chat masala..and garnish some shredded mozarella cheese on it and bake them.

It makes crispy yummy snack..specially when you run out of snacks to munch on.
