Euro 2004 - Quarter Finals

For my Xtreme Spice anything. even if it chafes. :flower1:

Vaisey, my wife is all pissed now becuase she likes England but loves Figo. I had to remind her by saying that ..“honey, you also like Totti, Del Piero and Matsui”.

seems bhaabi is an equal opportunity employer...did you get in via affirmative action? ;-) just kidding mate, good luck to your team!

Yes all the girls will be rooting for Portugal because of the Latin looks but the bottom line is ugly gits like Rooney will be smiling at the end of the night.

Waisay I'll bet there's some talent amongst the female supporters in the stands tonight.

Tums yaar, I might be a second stringer in the soccer department but I am a frist strnger in your bhabhis heart. :sunny: So she tells me…

X-treme, I was in Portugal and Spain during the 2000 tourney and man talent is off the hook…I am going to make siestas mandatory

Xtreme man, I had this image of you of a flamboyant charismatic person, who likes flair in all aspects of life, including most importantly football…I just cannot comprehend how you can favor such an ill-skilled person like Rooney. I’d prefer to watch Ronaldo playing football over Rooney anyday :k: Not to mention Mr flair himself: Zidane :jhanda:

my reasons why France will win this one:

If you look at the teams in the Q finals, we see that all of them had to produce their best football to go through:

Czech of course were in top gear against Holland, Portugal and England had to come from a defeat. Holland were in a awkward position etc.
France on the other hand, only had to produce 25% of their capacity to go through. Only difficult moments were 1-0 down to England when Zidane had to produce a drop of sweat and against Croatia when Trezeguet quickly overhauled the deficit.

If the French beat Greece, they will probably meet the Czech and in the final Holland/Portugal. Both these teams prefer attacking football, and that is when the French attack is at its best. Henry likes defenses who defend far from their goal so that there is room between the last man and the goalie. Same goes for Trez, Pires. Furthermore Ziddi is at his best when he can split open a defence with one single pass...especially when he can deliver it behind the last man.
So far the French faced teams that all keep 9 men behind the ball all the time and defend close to their own 16 yard box. This way both Henry and Trez were kept out of the game and it needed the sublime skills from Zidane to save France. Compare for example Euro 2000...France faced Denmark, Czech Republic, Holland, Spain, Portugal and Italy. Except for the last match all teams were very attacking. It can be said that the French had most problems against the Italians for the above reasons.

Add to this that France will surely up their game from 25 to at least 90% and one can justifiably argue that any team would shudder

of course they have to win from Greece first :D

Nescio good analysis but what you have described as "25%" effort from France might actually be their best...this team was impressive in the first halves of England and Croatia but they let teams hang around and get back into the game. Yes Zizou wills them to victory but sooner or later their back line (read: Desailly, Wiltord) are going to cost them big time. Barthez seems to have lost a step or two as well.

I honestly don't know who's going to win this tournament, a case could be made for almost every team (save Denmark and Greece) so it promises to be very exciting.

It's going to take a masterful effort to beat the French but if they take the Greek lightly, look out, they have South Korea of 2002 written all over them...

even though i have bet against England - i hope England can stay focused - Portugal might be a bit nervous playing a big game infront of home crowd.

both teams have offence to come back from deficiets - should be a good one!

Rooney is looking like a future team England superstar - his enterence as a 18 year old tops Owen's 98 where he showed great skills.

concern for England in net - Seaman was on decline in the world cup - one of the 2 Brazil goals should have been stopped.

Wasn't impressed with Martin in Euro 2000 - James has been average so far - if you are England - just pray that this game doesn't goes to shootout!

Whoaaaaaa!! Owen scores so early in the match. England one up. Costinha’s terrible headed backpass skillfully netted by Owen :k:

Couldnt score in three group games and scores so early in QF, thats the class of this player.

England win a free kick on the edge of the area after Ricardo Carvalho brings down Rooney.

16th Minute:
James collects Figo's cross with ease.

Rooney seemed injured and substituted so all the hype of Rooney-Ronaldo is over midway through the first half. But owen is looking sharper today.

This Rooney injury could be huge, Portugal is giving England all they can handle from the goal..

First half
England 1-0 Portugal

After that somewhat fortutiuos goal, England have not been convincing at all. Only some astute defending and some poor finishing by Portuguese has prevented a portuguese goal. Ronaldo and Deco in full flow.

England is leading 1/0 at half time. :hula:

Both teams couls have scored at least 2 or 3 goals each. Cracking match nonetheless. Rooney’s absence is a blow but Owen is playing much better today.

47th Minute:
HALF TIME - Portugal 0 England 1 - England lead at the break thanks to Michael Owen's early goal.

Seems like this game is being called tight, one gets the feeling a red card is in the offing...

Just remember that in England's previous four major tournaments, they have gone out after scoring the first goal

Euro 96: Lost to Germany in penalties after Gascgoine's early goal
WC 98: Lost to Argentina after Owen's wonder goal
Euro 00: Led 2-0 over Portugal in group game but lost 3-2
WC 02: Led Brazil 1-0 but saw 10-man team score twice
'04 ??

Figo has to find his game, else its curtains for Portugal

Portugal have had chances but failed to score? Now didn’t someone mention that their fancy football was all outside the box earlier? :ahaa:

Michael Owen got a chance and he damn well punished them. That’s because he’s a class finisher, while Portugal are a bunch of nancies :Pretty:
