okay so have to help a friend choose a ring. does not want to spend more than $300, is this reasonable ? how much do people usually spend? or is this being a little too stingy? at the same time why spend a lot on an engagement ring

Depends on how much money can be spared really. An engagement ring is not a necessity. He shouldn’t have to make payments on the thing for months or years or to come.

Who cares how much people spend on wedding rings. Ask yourself how much you can spend without resenting your significant other for spending that money.

Can’t say if he’s being stingy or not without knowing what kinda money he makes and what his financial obligations are.

Keeping up with the Joneses. People make irrational financial decision just to compete with others in society without realizing what kinda financial mess those others are in.
