There's no concept of "engagement" in Islam, but the idea of of imam zaamin comes from the 8th Imam - Imam Raza a.s. and his promise or having given zamaanat in a hadees.

To that end, the guys' family by tying the Imam Zaamin on the dulhan-to-be's arm, are promising the committment to the girl's family.

I found out recently that apparently there is a concept of engagement in Islam but not through the exchanging of rings or giving of any sort of gifts.
