They’re not “un-islamic” they’re just not islamic.. as in it’s not BAD to have one, it’s just unnecessary. There’s no value in an engagement in Islam. When both parties have agreed to get married, however, they are considered “engaged” and islamically it is not permissible for others to propose to someone who is engaged. So in that sense, it is recognized in Islam.
But yeah, I wouldn’t go too big on an engagement unless it’s a REALLY long time away from the wedding. I would just save all the “bang” for the big day.
