From what i was told- a pierced nose with a nose ring signifies that you are unmarried/a virgin. Thus the huge nath on the wedding day! But this was probably the origins of it like 100 years ago in the sub-continent. Even today in some of our extended family in Pakistan the unmarried girls are only allowed to wear silver rings in the nose to be replaced by a nose pin or stud after their shadi.

naths are the nose rings brides wear, or i guess used to wear
yea i've seen some brides wear them but not like before when everyone used to wear them
and u rarely see any models w/ nose rings or studs on these days
