Egyptian President's scare..and follwoing concerns

"Egypt’s President Hosni Mubarak suffered a “health crisis” as he was making a live televised speech, state TV said, cutting the transmission. "

Mubarak has been in power since 1981, if somethign were to happen to him..or eventually a new leader will be needed. what do you see playing out in Egypt.

Thap, you are probably more familiar with the power structure, mood on the street and the potential future leaders. what is your take?

I do hope its someone else other than his son, I have not been too impressed with leader’s kids who became leaders, george W, benazir bhutto, zia’s kid, mujeeb’s daughter, hafez assad’s son bashar, indira’s son..although performance wise rajiv gandhi was probably the best in terms of being a real leader in his own right. I have not discussed monarchies on purpose.

Quite frankly, I wouldn't have shed a tear if he croaked... so long as it would lead to free and fair elections (unlikely).

has he been that bad of a presidnet, heck anyone who had to follow Sadat had big shoes to fill. His long tenure shows the foresight in teh US system to not let a president serve more than two terms, i think it should be adopted in other places as well.

However, who else is ther ein egyptian politics to take on such a role at this point

The guy is a like 108 years old and looks 45 and there are a lot of rumours about him spending extended vacations in a plastic surgery resort in the Swiss Alps of late.

I'm half thinking that a huge pyramid is likely to be erected any day now and they'll reel out the canopic jars.

The word on the street is that his son has been groomed for some time, however opposition is said to be growing against this move. We'll see what materialises.

His wife 'Lady Mubarak' enjoys huge popularity here across the board she's held responsible for dishing out the country's meagre resources on some popular causes.

The library she had built quite close my home is great architecturally but has scant resources otherwise. Not enough PC's and books etc; my company is in the process of getting it kitted out.

Back to the subject, yes Mubarak’s son is tipped to be the next Pharaoh of Egypt. By all accounts he’s a bit of a putz though.

No fear, he only has a “severe flu and fever”.

You can say that again the people of egypt would be jumping for joy if he passed away, hes nothing but a blood thirsty dictator!

no one is saying mobarak is some stellar leader, but is there a real alternative right now, who are the potential leaders of the future..or is there a big vaccum.

I dont see any real leaders even outside of his circle..

not a good situation to be in

The same American system you adore so much is the one which has supported Mubarak for years and years. After Israel who recieves aid like Mubarak? and for what? He is nothing but a slave of the America, supported by the Whitehouse and succesive republicand and democractic admininistrations.

Fraudia, just like the capitalist system which you routinely support - your post is full of contradictions! On the one hand you claim not to support Mubarak - on the other, you call for the very system which has aided and abetted his tyranncial regime. Bush's cabinet would sell their own mother if it was in their interests. Supporting spineless rulers like Mubarak in the Muslim world is a clear part of america's plan to keep the Muslim world subordinate and subservient to the west.

Shame you can't see that.

What are your thoughts about his leadership Thap?

After reading the above, I am beginning to see the wisdom of banning the HT in Pakistan...the annoyance factor is too great to handle. Can we ban HT over here as well please? pretty please?

Sheraz, US supporting its interests is covered in many other posts, so if you want to discuss that, please go and whine in that post.

The point here is really simple, who in egyptian politics looks like a potential successor, who are future leaders etc.

but thank you for posting yet another emotional and non sensical post full of the same rhetoric. :)

Mufakkar,

see you are getting the hang of it too..

Is there any thing like "politics" in Egypt? I thought Mobarak is all they had (or were allowed to have).

Was Mubarak well known as a leader back in the Anwar el Sadat days? If not maybe some other general is waiting in the wings to take over.

I was just curious though, I believe Mobarak was head of the airforce when he took over....did he ever retire or is he still el generalissimo?

Jee Mashallah say kabhi ghuroor naheen kiya... :D

For those that don;t know Hosni Mubarak managed to get the incredible figure of 99.98% of the vote in last election. You make of that what you will.

Mubarak claims 99.98% of the Vote

That figure makes even saddam hussein blush and musharaff of pakistan hide his head in the sand!

Make no doubts about it Mubarak is a brutal dictator matching even saddam hussien and the previous syrian leader for sheer murder and oppression in the middle east!

for the people actually supporting this oppresive dictator which of course includes the American Regime all i can say is get a life!

the post is not about whether or not one supports mobarak, the question is about who are the other potential leaders in egypt. Can we stay on the topic?

you can go and blast puppet regimes as much as you want in a thread decidated to that topic.

Here the simple question is who are the other leaders in egypt who can take his position, one name mentioned was hsi son, but other than that who else is there. The question of the political system being corrupt and what nots is a diff point.

Are you saying egypt is so backward they can only produce blood thirsty dictators!

Egypt is more than capable if a old age dictator with thousands of deaths on his hand vanishes from the scene!

Mubarak claimed to get 99.98% of the vote, that is not off the topic neither is the fact he is blood thirsty madman.

If mubarak goes and the whole muslim world would not shed a single tear if he did. Egypt would not capitulate into chaos because things cannot get worse than they already are!

Yes there are leaders. Though they are quickly silenced. Permanently if need be. Mubarak runs a dictatorship no different from Saddam. Everybody is either on his side or is dead. Thats just the way it is. Is he popular? Nope. Is he a good leader? Nope. His son is a putz with no backbone and no mind. Excellent puppet me thinks. He deserves to go and quickly a la suharto.

yet again the post is not about saying that Mobarak is some great leader or that egypt can only produce mediocre leaders like him, but just wondering who are the other leaders on the horizon, in whichever sort of political situation, in the current set up his son is being touted as a replacement which is lame because surely there are other capable people around..but who are they, i would like to know names, backgrounds etc.
