Dressing for an interview!

Re: Dressing for an interview!

Here in the UK, we are always advised to dress smart (preferably a suit).

Re: Dressing for an interview!

I've heard that one should dress up a more then what they would be expected to wear on a regular basis in the role. So if the role required business causal then wear a suit to the interview.

Re: Dressing for an interview!

Yup, especially cos we're big on making a good impression and 'representing' our company!

Re: Dressing for an interview!

When you show up for an interview, not only your objective should be to present yourself as a dependable and trustworthy person, your appearance also speaks volumes of how much respect you have for the position/company/interviewing person(/team).

Think of it this way. I invite you to my house for a wedding to attend, and you show up in tank top and shorts. What would I think of you? I would think that you insulted me. Same at a job. When you put a nice clean suit and tie on, it appears that you took time out to prepare yourself for the occasion and it reflects the respect and importance you are giving to this occasion. And I dont care if i am applying for grocery clerk job or engineering manager's position, I think I will always appear as a business professional.

Re: Dressing for an interview!

dress shirt and dress pants for interview. if possible suit is also recommended. once you land in company, you need to follow HR guidelines. it will help you in your daily dressing. Generally, HR emphases on neat, clean, nice and good dressing which dont offend any group, religion, caste and last but not least you should smell good. ;)

Re: Dressing for an interview!

im in the accounting field and i've always worn a business suit to my interviews.the office dress code is business casual but still, i can't imagine anyone not showing up in a suit for an interview for an office type setting. i prefer wearing light blouses with my suit because i think it adds more personality and approachability to my look than if i wear a collared shirt. i dont think you can ever go wrong with a suit for an interview! it really shows that your serious about the job.

i remember in school, my teacher told us to wear glasses to our interviews because apparently it makes us look intelligent. do you guys think this is true? funny thing is, i wore my glasses to all my interviews after graduating and i wasnt getting any offers. so for the next interview i had, my mom told me not to wear them (apparently i look younger with glasses on) and i actually got the job!

Re: Dressing for an interview!

^ I bought a pair of glasses that I think are super nerdy-cute…but I have yet to wear them out anywhere. i’m just so used to wearing contacts. Btw, what do you mean light blouse vs collared shirt? collared shirt is button down shirt?

and yeah, I can’t imagine NOT wearing a suit for an interview. For college jobs I got away with weraing dress pants and a blouse/shirt. I suppose the latter is ok (If u have no other choice) but I’ve heard of ppl coming in shorts/flip-flops/“club” wear?

Re: Dressing for an interview!

this is so new to me... im in IT as well and have been for over a decade, but have always worn a suit to the interview and at work, have always had to be in professional attire..

I guess, my role is a lot to do with client interaction, so maybe a little different.. I dunno? But my hubby, also in IT, has always worn a suit to inteviews as well..

Re: Dressing for an interview!

here we go:

what to wear to a nonprofit interview

the comments about not wearing a suit are in the comments…

Re: Dressing for an interview!

Saw the page and the conclusion that I could come up with was that they mentioned Google, Apple and Microsoft by name about not wearing suits and I think that might be because these companies have a totally different culture then most companies so it might be ok to not wear suits to the interview but like one of the comments say, find out the company dress code and then dress up accordingly.

Re: Dressing for an interview!

I always pay attention to what I wear. Pressed, clean and well put together.

My makeup is simple. Same goes for jewelry...simple studs and a watch. No noisy business. I always do mani/pedi before an interview and again keep the colors neutral or no polish and clear coat. No strong perfume. Hair, out of my face and neat...usually a pony tail.

Basically the idea is look professional and keep the focus on the interview.

I've done that too. I think the key is to make sure its not the super long kameezes and can look nice on a pair of black pants.

I was looking for your post!

Re: Dressing for an interview!

today im wearing trainers, skinnies, t-shirt dress and a leather jacket.... but thats coz its dress down friday :D

i work in accounts and for my interview i wore a suit (from primark) before then i always got away with smart/casual wear. my manager sometimes wears her black jeans to work during the week.. altho i try and keep it smart, its easy going smart casual here too

i dont think i wud survive long in a place where i had to be suited and booted everyday,,, mainly because i can never find any hijabi friendly (hot looking) suits id have to look like a frump always :(

Re: Dressing for an interview!

Teachers shouldn't wear suits cos we look dumb in them. I giggle when I see teachers wearing suits at interviews. They're just not practical, especially as you have to teach during the interview process and suits are so off putting for kids.

I always wear neutral colour clothes (black trousers or skirt with semi-smart blouse) and a statement necklace, some teacher shoes with heels and a teacher bag. I have a separate 'work' wardrobe, teacher things and non teacher things. I take the teacher look very seriously. Plus I get to buy more things, teacher things and normal things. YAY!

Re: Dressing for an interview!

Push up bra. Deep neck shirt. You are set.

Re: Dressing for an interview!

The concept of not wearing a suite at an interview is totally foreign to me.
From HS on i've been in the business magnet (business based school) and always been drilled on wearing suits - dark suits; nothing to fashionable but classic.

My first boss (still my mentor) always said dress for the job you want - not have.

Re: Dressing for an interview!

yes,i always dress formally according to the "formal dressing" the country has, that i am giving interview in...when in pakistan,i used to wear decent, mostly plain shalwar kameez for interview..here is KSA,shirt with long skirt is considered formal so i always wear that when going for interview..

Re: Dressing for an interview!

I just went to a seminar on Interviews just yesterday.

Attire is important. The resume doesn't get you the job. It gets you the interview, which determines whether you get the job. Dressing appropriately is a must. The lady mentioned to dress well, and it's better to be overdressed than underdressed. An interviewer would remember and make a negative comment about a candidate being underdressed rather than a candidate being overdressed.

For men, a good tailored suit, with clean shoes.

For women, a pant suit, or blazer, plain dress shirt and skirt, again with clean shoes.

Get somethign with a comfortable fit, so that it doesn't bother or distract you from your interview.

Re: Dressing for an interview!

I've always been curious about what women in Pakistan wear to interviews/jobs.

Re: Dressing for an interview!

Being a Manager..if i were to interview candidate..one thing i would really look at is..the way person is dressed. It tells me lot about a person. So power to ya Syraa.
