I have watched the video. Dr. Israr came across very naive on many issues. I am surprised how much a person can expose himself in pressure interviews.

The Prophet changed his course of action several times in his life. You need to study the whole prophetic life and evaluate logically the reasons behind every change. Which ever course of action he took actually was the best available option for the betterment of Islam. You have to keep in mind the fact also that he had a special mission of establishing Islam as a major religion within his life time. Also you have to bear in mind the political reality of that time where religion was something implemanted by state, and an individual could not go against state religion.
Compare the conditions prevailing today. If you do not allow churches and temples to be made in an Islamic state, ban practising any other religion, and impose your Islamic way of life on everybody by force, Islam will be seen as an intolerant religion. Instead of attracting people to Islam you will have people going away from Islam. Will it be for the betterment of Islam. When sunnah teaches us to take a course which is for the betterment of Islam, will it not be against the principles off sunnah to implement state Islam in today's circumstances...
You can not be more wrong than when you state Islam will only be an empty slogan without state Islam. Islam is a self cleansing religion which encourages followers to audit themselves. The real fear for a real believer is the wrath of Allah in the hereafter and not the punishment by state.
Yes we must follow the example of our beloved prophet. His example teaches us to take a course of action which is for the betterment of Islam, which makes morally better human beings and which is logical.
As far as implementing state Islam or not implementing state Islam is concerned he acted according to the logical requirement of different situations.
