Re: donations based on race and religion?
I believe each mohallah in pakistan is doing their bit to help out their country.. i am not in touch with any NGO's but relatives are saying that peopel from their street get trucks and the rest of the peopel are filling trucks with food and clothing, especially for the children and taking them up themselves...
over the weekend we had a radiothon to collect money... it was through redcross.. so people did give a fair bit.
Having said that, I have felt from our own community here that people are very reluctant to donate through World Vision and other leading organisations in the world.. on the basis of not being Muslim run.
At times like this, I think one needs to put down such assumptions and give. Do not hold back.... give however you can.
Re: donations based on race and religion?
thats very interesting… ‘0’ from US?? the BBC chart contradicts this completely
Re: donations based on race and religion?
contradicts? :) not quite
The source of your BBC chart and this document is the same i.e. OCHA.
mine is one day older
and then there is a definition of what is committed but not yet received vs what is received, so if u look at numbers closely and add them up the numbers shown as pledged by US in my link are basically the same a shown donated on the BC chart
Re: donations based on race and religion?
aaah i kinda figured that out..
good on US

Re: donations based on race and religion?
thank God Australia is doing its bit as well..
I know a lot of the muslim and pak organisations are trying to do as much as they can from here..
whats even greater to see is the youth that's getting involved.. little 17-18 yr olds turning up to help out. And i thought they all slept in till 2 on weekends...
Great effort... I hope somehow the peopel of Pakistan can be pulled out of this horrendous azaab
Re: donations based on race and religion?
wondering... do local people in Pak get to see this kind of data in their newspaper?
I mean, most people there just bag US and other non-muslim countries for their lack of assistance and what not.. it'd be good for them to see such things.
But having said that, most would be quite cynical of this...
Re: donations based on race and religion?
There are many stark difference between the earthquake of 2005 and floods of 2010. The earthquake hit major cities as well, and many of you may remember, all TV stations were broadcasting reports of Margalla towers crashing down in Islamabad for hour on end, while noone in the country even knew the extent of the damage in the northern areas. Its all about politics.
On the other hand, most of the people currently affected by the floods are villagers and nomads who setup huts alongside riverbanks. For most of the people living in major cities inside Pakistan, these villagers dont even exist. One can very well imagine that if we ourselves are so cold towards our brethren, there is little we can expect from foreign countries.
Another pet peeve I have is with our government, which throws up its hands at the sight of a natural catastrophe, begging for alms across the world. At least start the work on your own. Let foreigners come in when they do, but that shouldnt make you sit and wait for help to come in before you move a finger.
